John R. Mario Honored With ASTM International Award of Merit for Service to Forensic Sciences Committee

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., -John R. Mario, forensic scientist IV, drug chemistry section, at the Suffolk County Crime Laboratory in Hauppauge, N.Y., has received the ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow from Committee E30 on Forensic Sciences. The Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow is ASTM's highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.
Mario is chairman of Subcommittee E30.92 on Terminology and has been the ASTM Committee E30 representative to the Scientific Working Group for the Analysis of Seized Drugs (SWGDRUG) since 1998. A member of ASTM International since 1996, he received the Committee E30 Distinguished Service Award in 2001.
A qualified expert witness in the analysis of controlled substances in the Suffolk County, N.Y., Supreme and County Courts, Mario has worked at the Suffolk County Crime Laboratory since 1981. He is also an associate adjunct professor of chemistry at Suffolk County Community College, Riverhead, N.Y.
Outside ASTM International, Mario is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the International Association for Identification, the Northeastern Association of Forensic Scientists and the Scientific Working Group for the Analysis of Seized Drugs.
A graduate of the University of Connecticut where he received a B.A. in psychology and an M.A. in philosophy, Mario also holds an M.S. in forensic science from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York.
