Subcommittee D02.J on Aviation Fuels, part of ASTM International Committee D02, will meet June 3-5, 2008 in Warsaw, Poland. Some topics include updates on recent proposals for aviation fuels from Fischer-Tropsch methods and biomass conversion methods, limiting amount of biodiesel in aviation fuels, and proposing HPLC to detect MDA in fuel. In addition, a training and technical course, Aviation Fuels: Specifications and Test Methods, will take place at the Hilton, Warsaw, on June 2-3.

ASTM International Aviation Fuels Subcommittee to Meet in Warsaw, Poland



Subcommittee D02.J on Aviation Fuels, part of ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, will meet June 3-5, 2008, at the Hilton Warsaw Hotel and Convention Centre in Warsaw, Poland.

Recognized and used worldwide, the standards produced by Subcommittee D02.J include specifications, test methods and practices to help ensure that aviation fuels are fit and remain clean and dry prior to use. Topics to be discussed at the Subcommittee D02.J meetings include:

o Updates on recent proposals for aviation fuels from Fischer-Tropsch methods and
biomass conversion methods;
o Review and update the fully synthetic fuel at Johannesburg International Airport for
Sasol, South Africa;
o Putting a limit on the amount of biodiesel in aviation fuels which results from pipeline transport;
o Effects of free water on ASTM D2386, Test Method for Freezing Point of Aviation
Fuels;
o Developing a fuel breakpoint test method to replace JFTOT procedure (ASTM D3241, Test Method for Thermal Oxidation Stability of Aviation Turbine Fuels);
o Proposing HPLC (high pressure liquid chromatography) to detect MDA (metal
deactivator additive) in fuel;
o CRC (Coordinating Research Committee) program to examine the MDA long-term
effects on fuel stability with and without dissolved metals being present;
o The use of ethanol in aviation gasoline; and
o Recent changes to ASTM standards D1655, Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuels;
D6615, Specification for Jet B Wide-Cut Aviation Turbine Fuel; and D910,
Specification for Aviation Gasolines.

In addition to the committee meetings, an ASTM International Technical and Professional Training Course will take place at the Hilton Warsaw on June 2-3. The course, "Aviation Fuels: Specifications and Test Methods," will examine how specifications are used to control the quality of aviation fuels and why they affect product performance and availability. Other topics that will be discussed include methods of testing and the manufacture of aviation fuels and transportation systems, and the interaction of fuels with aircraft engines and ground equipment.
