ASC unveils CAD symbol for specifying adhesives.

Press Release Summary:

ASC, in collaboration with ASTM, has released ASTM International Standard D7447-08 and accompanying electronic symbol to enable engineers, architects, designers, and other end-users to represent adhesives on CAD drawings. Users can complete fields with information such as adhesive chemistry type and physical form, surface preparation, and curing information. Individuals can download executable plug-in of symbol from www.adhesives.org and use it in AutoCAD® as well as TurboCAD®.

ASC Unveils Adhesive CAD Symbol Designed to Simplify Specifying Adhesives

Bethesda, MD, June 15, 2009-The Adhesive and Sealant Council, Inc. (ASC), in collaboration with ASTM, has released a new ASTM International standard, D7447-08, Standard Practice for Symbolizing Adhesive Applications. This standard, and the accompanying electronic symbol, enable engineers, architects, designers and other end-users to more conveniently represent adhesives on computer-aided design (CAD) drawings.

Individuals can download a free, executable plug-in of the symbol from www.adhesives.org and use it in several versions of AutoCAD® as well as TurboCAD®. Users can complete fields with information such as adhesive chemistry type and physical form, surface preparation, curing information and more.

When asked about the development of the new symbol, ASC President Lawrence D. Sloan said, "ASC initiated the adhesive CAD symbol project in response to focus group feedback received from the engineering, architecture and design communities. ASC wanted to understand these groups' perceptions of adhesives. What we learned was that these 'end-users' desired a way to graphically represent an adhesive on a CAD drawing."

From those focus group sessions, ASC approached ASTM International with the idea of creating a new global standard and symbol. The new standard resulted from ASC's efforts with ASTM's D14 Adhesives Committee, specifically the D14.60 subcommittee, which manages the Adhesive Material Classification System.

"The focus group respondents indicated they would be more amenable to specifying adhesives as an alternative fastener type because the tool would eliminate the tedious task of manually adding adhesives in the 'notes' section of CAD programs," commented Sloan.

Designers, engineers, architects and other individuals preparing CAD drawings benefit from the use of ASTM D7447 in two important ways. Using the electronic CAD symbol saves users' time, while allowing more specific adhesives information to be included on the actual CAD drawings.

To download the ASTM D7447-08 Standardized Adhesive CAD Symbol (free plug-in), visit www.adhesives.org/Library/AdhesiveCADSymbol.aspx. A series of short videos are also available to assist individuals in properly downloading, activating and using the plug-in. The ASTM D7447-08 Standard Practice for Symbolizing Adhesive Applications can be purchased for a nominal fee.

The Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) is a North American trade association dedicated to representing the adhesive and sealant industry. Incorporated in 1958, ASC is bound by the collective efforts of its members, and strives to improve the industry operating environment and strengthen its member companies. ASC members represent more than 75% of the U.S. industry. The Council is comprised of 120 adhesive and sealant manufacturers, raw material and equipment suppliers, distributors and industry consultants.
