Cross-Sector Anti-Counterfeiting Solutions to be Explored at September 22 ANSI Conference
Secretary Locke of the U.S. Department of Commerce to deliver keynote address
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is pleased to announce that registration is open for its upcoming anti-counterfeiting conference, Crossing Borders and Sectors: Exploring Robust Anti-Counterfeiting Solutions.
The September 22 meeting, part of the World Standards Week (WSW) 2010 series of events, will define and address the need for standards and conformance programs that can help fight counterfeiting across industries, market sectors, and national borders.
"Recent estimates from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development put counterfeiting at up to $200 billion or more per year, jeopardizing consumer health and safety and undermining economic growth and business innovation," said S. Joe Bhatia, ANSI president and CEO. "A lot is already being done in various areas to fight counterfeiting. But we need to identify the gaps and possible overlaps in how standards and conformity assessment systems are enabling solutions to prevent this fast-growing and far-reaching economic crime. ANSI is pleased to have organized this conference as a neutral venue for all stakeholders to come together to address key issues and priorities, and to explore solutions."
Gary Locke, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, will provide the keynote address, offering an overview of President Obama's National Export Initiative, an inter-agency effort which aims to double exports over the next five years in support of 2 million American jobs, and fight counterfeiting in overseas markets.
The conference will take a cross-sector approach in finding strategies to lessen the occurrence and impact of counterfeiting in the U.S. and abroad. Through interactive discussions with speakers from INTERPOL, Underwriters Laboratories, the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Pharmacopeia, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and more, participants will work collaboratively to input to a final deliverable action guide for anti-counterfeiting.

Crossing Borders and Sectors: Exploring Robust Anti-Counterfeiting Solutions will be held on September 22, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza National Airport in Arlington, VA. Stakeholders are urged to register as soon as possible to assure a spot at this exciting event. Registration is $195 for ANSI members and government employees, and $225 for non-members.
