Anthony W. Thornton is Named Chairman of ASTM International Metal Powders and Metal Powder Products Committee



W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., -Anthony W. Thornton, director of product integrity and performance and a senior product scientist at Micromeritics Instrument Corp., Norcross, Ga., has been named chairman of ASTM International Committee B09 on Metal Powders and Metal Powder Products. Committee B09 oversees approximately 60 standards published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards.

An ASTM International fellow and Award of Merit recipient, Thornton has been a member of ASTM International since 1987. In addition to his work as B09 chair, he also leads Subcommittee B09.01 on Nomenclature and Technical Data. He is chairman of Subcommittee C21.04 on Raw Materials, part of Committee C21 on Ceramic Whitewares and Related Products; chairman of Subcommittee E29.02 on Non-Sieving Methods, part of Committee E29 on Particle and Spray Characterization; and membership secretary of Committee E56 on Nanotechnology.

Thornton, who is currently serving a term on the ASTM board of directors, is also a member of Committees C01 on Cement, C07 on Lime, C28 on Advanced Ceramics, D11 on Rubber, D18 on Soil and Rock, D20 on Plastics and D24 on Carbon Black. He was honored with a Service Award from the Committee on Standards in 2010, a B09 Distinguished Service Award in 2001 and an E29 Award of Appreciation in 2002.

At Micromeritics Instrument Corp., a developer and manufacturer of instruments used for materials science, Thornton's responsibilities include ensuring that all new products and updates meet customer requirement specifications and that product development procedures are followed.

After earning a B.S. in chemistry and an M.S. in analytical chemistry from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., Thornton joined the Micromeritics staff as a research chemist in 1980. He became a technical specialist at the company in 1984, a laboratory manager in 1987 and a training manager in 1995. He assumed his senior product scientist position in 2000 and his director position in 2009.

In addition to his ASTM International, Thornton is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Catalysis Society of South Africa, the International Adsorption Society and the International Organization for Standardization.
