December 17 ANSI Cities Network Webinar Covers IEC Systems Evaluation Group on Smart Cities
On December 17, from 2 pm to 3 pm Eastern, the monthly webinar of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Network on Smart and Sustainable Cities (ANSSC) will feature a report on the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Standardization Management Board (SMB) Systems Evaluation Group on smart cities (SEG-1).
Manyphay Viengkham from General Electric Power & Water and GE Energy, and who represented the U.S. National Committee (USNC) of the IEC on the SEG-1, will be the featured speaker.
SEG-1 was chartered in June 2013 to evaluate and determine the need to establish an IEC systems committee (SyC) on smart cities. An SyC is a relatively new type of entity within IEC which may span multiple technical committees (TCs) and external organizations, and may define reference architectures and use cases and develop standards. In undertaking this evaluation, the SEG-1 reviewed relevant works included in the SyC’s scope, generic use cases, a possible reference architecture model, a standardization roadmap including gap identification, a survey and collection of existing and to-be-defined evaluation, metrics and terms and definitions, and a mapping of closely related activities in cooperation with IEC internal technical bodies, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and other organizations, fora, and consortia. At the end of August 2015, SEG-1 submitted its final report to the SMB recommending the establishment of an IEC SyC on electrotechnical aspects of smart cities. That question is now being balloted to the IEC national committee members.
Manyphay Viengkham has over fifteen years of energy industry and utility services experience with a focus on systems-of-system interoperability design and development using systems engineering concepts and methodologies. She holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science and biochemistry and a master’s degree in business administration. Ms. Viengkham has nine years of working experience in a multi-service utility (electric generation, electric T&D, water filtration, wastewater collection and treatment, broadband services) in the roles of internet/security specialist, programmer/analyst, and applications manager. She joined General Electric in 2010 as the senior systems engineer within the GE Smart Grid Solutions team, was senior systems analyst/product manager for the Software as a Service team, and is currently the client engagement manager within the GE Power Generation Software Solutions organization. In these roles she has worked on leading systems solution architecture, development, and deployment projects using systems engineering methodologies. Ms. Viengkham has also contributed significantly to the global IEC smart grid rollout. In addition, she’s served on the International Council of Systems Engineers (INCOSE) board for several years.
