ANSI Seeks Comments on New ISO Field of Activity on Safety Management on Complex Technical Systems

Feedback due by April 8

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has circulated a proposal for a new field of activity on safety management of complex technical systems. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all relevant and interested stakeholders to submit comments on the proposal by the end of the business day on Friday, April 8, 2016.

The proposed new committee would contribute to the development of standardization in the field of complex technical systems, such as aerospace systems, including all their constituent elements (e.g., operators, manufacturers of industrial products, industrial infrastructures, maintenance and repair organizations, training centers, etc.) throughout the full life cycle. The committee would also define and classify threats and risk factors; procedures for determining safety efficiency, including predictive risk modeling; and recommendations on the practical application of risk management.

The Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology (GOST R), which holds the function of National Standards Body in the Russian Federation, and represents Russia in international (and regional) organizations for standardization, submitted the proposal.

All interested stakeholders are invited to review the proposal, which includes a listing of relevant external international organizations and documents related to the development of the work. Please submit comments to Steve Cornish, ANSI senior director of international policy (scornish@ansi.org), by close of business on April 8, 2016. Based on the input received, the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) will then be asked to approve an ANSI position and comments to be submitted to ISO before its May 17, 2016, deadline for voting on this proposal.

ANSI has published an explanatory information document outlining the process used to develop U.S. positions on issues and activities under consideration by ISO and IEC.
