ANSI, NIST, and Standardization Administration of China Sign Tripartite Agreement on Standards Collaboration
As President Barack Obama met with President Hu Jintau of China last week, members and staff of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) welcomed a delegation from the Standardization Administration of China (SAC), led by SAC Administrator Ji Zhengkun, for a series of high-level meetings on U.S.-China standards collaboration.
Held January 19-21, in Washington, DC, the prime focus of the visit was the signing of a tripartite Statement of Intent (SOI) between ANSI, SAC, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The SOI agreement builds on more than twenty-five years of U.S.-China cooperation in the area of standards, and is intended to foster enhanced public-private partnership and technical exchange between the two nations.
During a formal signing ceremony at NIST headquarters on January 19, ANSI President and CEO S. Joe Bhatia joined NIST Director Pat Gallagher and Mr. Ji in commending the SOI as an important and positive step forward in strengthening U.S.-Sino trade. The agreement is intended to broaden collaboration on standards issues, build upon existing successful standards cooperation activities, and lay the groundwork for future collaboration. Continued standards dialogue will seek to foster exchange on standards needs and activities in areas of interest to the U.S. and China, and facilitate the development and use of international standards.
On January 21, the SAC delegation met with ANSI members and staff for a review of recent collaborative activities between the two organizations, including the StandardsPortal; a 2007 symposium on industry participation in standards [see related news item]; and the ANSI Manufacturer Member Roundtable in China.
Looking forward, ANSI and SAC discussed potential initiatives to address energy management and other global priorities. Mr. Ji reinforced SAC's commitment to collaborating with ANSI on these key priorities, through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and other channels of cooperation.
