Gary Kushnier Receives Leo B. Moore Award

On August 15, several members of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) federation were honored by SES - The Society for Standards Professionals at the 60th Annual SES Conference in Las Vegas.

Gary Kushnier, ANSI vice president of international policy, was awarded the prestigious Leo B. Moore Award. SES's highest honor, the award recognizes outstanding achievement, extraordinary contribution, and distinguished service in the field of standardization, and its professional advancement through original research and writing, creative application and development, or professional and public service. The award is named for the late Dr. Leo B. Moore, a professor-emeritus from Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management, and was first given by SES in 1963 to the U.S. Secretary of Defense, the Honorable Robert S. McNamara.

"Mr. Kushnier's dedication, interest, and knowledge of U.S. policy for standardization is unsurpassed, and he has advocated tirelessly for U.S. interests in international and regional standardization bodies," said Ellen Emard, SES Awards Committee chair. "His long personal relationships and diplomacy with individuals from other countries often solve issues in moments instead of years."

Mr. Kushnier has served the standardization community for over 35 years in various roles supporting U.S. policy in international standardization forums. He has been particularly active with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), the Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC), and the Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT), as well as their national member bodies. He also has served as the PASC executive committee chairman for nine years, and in that capacity represented the interests of international standards organizations to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Subcommittee on Standards and Conformance.

James T. Pauley, senior vice president of external affairs and government relations at Schneider Electric USA, was designated as a Fellow of SES. This award is presented for professional distinction in, and special contribution to, the field of standardization. A member of the ANSI Board of Directors and chairman of the Finance Committee, Mr. Pauley also co-chairs the ANSI Electric Vehicles Standards Panel (EVSP).

Dr. Richard J. Forselius, program leader at the United Technologies Corporation/Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, was awarded the SES/CSA Lorne K. Wagner Memorial Award. This award is sponsored by the Canadian Standards Association to recognize the contributions Lorne K. Wagner made to SES as a member for almost twenty years. The award recognizes noteworthy contribution or service to the growth and development of SES. Dr. Forselius is former member of the ANSI Board of Directors and a past chairman of the ANSI Committee on Education.

ANSI members and staff congratulate the award recipients on their well-deserved honors.
