Did You Know? offers a quick look at the broad scope of activities underway within the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Federation of members and partners, highlighting recent accomplishments and new resources related to standardization.

ASSE and CPWR Release Spanish-language Safety Resources for Construction Workers

The American Society of Safety Engineers, an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has teamed up with CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training to release 52 free guides on health and safety information for construction sites in both English and Spanish.

The Safety Toolbox Talks collection was first published in English two years ago by CPWR. ASSE has collaborated with CPWR to translate the documents into Spanish, making them accessible for a greater audience. The talks promote a safety culture in the workplace with information on case studies, questions for discussion, and site-specific actions. Areas of discussion include biohazard safety, eye protection, and confined spaces, among many more.

“Making content that has proven useful among English-speaking construction workers available for Spanish-speaking at-risk workers is imperative to truly improve workplace safety,” said Michael Belcher, ASSE president. “We are committed to reduce injuries and deaths on the job that disproportionally affect Latino workers and this is the first step to tackle this issue. Partnering with CPWR gives us the opportunity to create useful tools and improve the content and the means in which workers are approached.”

ASTM and ICC to Host Delegation of GSO Officials for Training Program

ASTM International, an ANSI member and audited designator, and the International Code Council (ICC), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, will host a delegation from the Gulf Cooperation Council Standardization Organization (GSO) this April.

Activities will include visits to the ASTM, ICC, and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) offices; meet with engineering firms and manufacturers to discuss standards and codes; visit government agencies that oversee code enforcement; and more.

ASTM and ICC are coordinating these activities as part of their three-year partnership for the Standards and Codes for Sustainable Construction project. This initiative supports efforts in the Gulf region to promote economic growth, water conversation, building safety, materials management, and energy efficiency.
