Standards for Accessibility Exhibition on Capitol Hill Planned for U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day

Press release date: August 13, 2010

Exhibition and sponsorship opportunities now available On behalf of the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day (WSD) Planning Committee, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is pleased to announce the Standards for Accessibility exhibition on Capitol Hill, to be held on September 24, 2010. Part of the overall 2010 U.S. Celebration of WSD, the Standards for Accessibility Hill outreach event is being held in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. This event will feature exhibits from a number of standards developing organizations highlighting the role that standards play in achieving universal access for all populations. The U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day (WSD) will take place on September 23, 2010, at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC. The event is organized annually by a planning committee consisting of representatives from across the standards and conformity assessment community, and is co-chaired by ANSI and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) serves as the administrating organization for 2010. The different abilities and needs of people across the country have led to a myriad of accessibility issues and requirements in every industry. From technologies that are user-friendly for the deaf and blind communities, to physical environments that are accessible to persons with physical disabilities, to products that can be easily used by the elderly, accessibility solutions allow for the greatest number of people to enjoy many aspects of everyday life that may otherwise be unmanageable. Standards have a critical influence on accessibility across all industries and around the globe. The Capitol Hill event will be held in the Cannon House Office Building Caucus Room on September 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A simple lunch will be served. Exhibiting organizations include:
Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions
American National Standards Institute
ASTM International
Consumer Electronics Association
International Code Council
International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials
National Fire Protection Association
National Institute of Building Sciences
National Institute of Standards and Technology
