ANSI Announces 2009 Membership Dues and Fees Modifications

In an announcement to members issued this week, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has announced three modifications relating to the Institute's membership dues and assessment fees for 2009:

o a full member dues increase of four percent

o a domestic assessment fee increase of five percent

o an international assessment fee increase of eight percent

Membership dues for all full membership categories

At its meeting on September 11, 2008, the ANSI Finance Committee approved a 2009 full member dues increase of four percent, nearly half a point lower than the 2008 annual run rate for inflation. ANSI will continue to focus on cost containment and efficiency-enhancing measures that support the delivery of high-quality, value-added services to members. The Institute will also continue its efforts to seek out and grow membership and participation, and to diversify its revenue-generating programs.

The membership dues modifications are in line with a forward-looking program approved by the ANSI Board of Directors in 2007 that ensures the financial stability of the Institute while avoiding the significant financial impact on members of less frequent but larger percentage increases. "During the coming year, ANSI will be advancing our leadership of national priority issues such as the global supply chain and chemicals, developing new initiatives such as web-based information resources for ANSI members and executive awareness programs for members and non-members, and sponsoring special events such as the Import Safety Summit," said Brian Meincke, director of membership development for ANSI.

Last year, ANSI announced that the domestic and international fee schedules for national activity assessments and for the administrators of U.S. Technical Advisory Groups and internationally-held Secretariats would remain unchanged during a one-year transition period. No such increases were levied in 2008.

Assessment fees for domestic standards activities

In keeping with current inflationary rates, a domestic fee increase of five percent will be enacted in 2009. This fee modification will also offset the rising administrative costs associated with governance and infrastructure activities, such as new accreditation and reaccreditations, audits, and appeals.

Assessment fees for international standards activities

The 2009 international assessment fee increase of eight percent will cover current inflationary rates, but it will primarily offset the decline of the U.S. dollar relative to the Swiss Franc, the currency used for payment of ANSI's annual member dues to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

A reminder of this information will also be included in the transmittal of the 2009 dues invoices.
