The Aluminum Association Releases New "Standard Test Procedure for Aluminum Alloy Grain Refiners" Edition



ARLINGTON, VA, — The Aluminum Association has released the 2012 edition of the “Standard Test Procedure for Aluminum Alloy Grain Refiners,” popularly known as TP-1.



The test procedures described in the publication are used to determine the ability of grain refiners to reduce grain size during solidification of aluminum alloys under standardized conditions, and for examining the structure of the grain refiner for uniformity.  It has been reissued after a joint Task Group of the Aluminum Association’s Master Alloys and Additives Division and the Technical Committee on Product Standards completed a round robin to evaluate the procedure described in TP-1.  



A separate report of the findings of the Task Group “Report on the Interpretation of the Precision and Accuracy of the TP-1 Test When Multiple Laboratories Evaluate the Same Grain Refiner” has also been published which includes details and evaluation of the round robin results.
