AIM Publishes Guidance on Data Content & Structure in Passive Tags

Document will assist RFID tag system implementation & compatibility

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | AIM, the trusted worldwide industry association for the automatic identification industry, providing unbiased information, educational resources and standards to providers and users of these technologies for nearly half a century, announced the release today of Guidance on Data Content and Structure in Passive Tags to help system integrators select the best options when installing radio frequency identification (RFID) tag systems to identify objects.

While the concept of storing data and identifying objects with an RFID tag is not new, research has shown that many individuals and organizations do not fully understand the implications of tag numbers, the potential for problems that can arise, or how and where to get a unique number that works in their respective environment.

This issue prompted the members of AIM's RFID Experts Group, known to industry insiders as the REG, to undertake the project to write and publish a comprehensive guideline that provides a better understanding of options, along with components to detail numbering standards that currently exist, and which resources offer the best compatibility of numbering for an organization.

AIM Chief Operating Officer Mary Lou Bosco shared this comment, "We are grateful to the entire REG team and its leadership for bringing this project to completion.  As RFID tag usage continues to expand globally, many companies encounter tag system integration issues that can prove daunting, and could be the difference between success and failure, not to mention have a significant impact for return on investment.  With the new Data Content document, system integrators not only have a resource, but the expertise and experience of the industry leaders who helped to create and standardize RFID technology."
