ACGIH Presents Webinar for Upper Limb Localized Fatigue TLV.

Content, presented by David M. Rempel with further contribution from Thomas J. Armstrong, will include introduction to localized fatigue, scientific basis for TLV®, methods of determining force patterns, application of TLV®, and case studies applicable to TLV®.

ACGIH® Presents Upper Limb Localized Fatigue TLV® Webinar



Cincinnati, Ohio – ACGIH® will present Upper Limb Localized Fatigue TLV® on November 17, 2016 at the following times:

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time

2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Central Time

1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Mountain Time

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time



In 2016 ACGIH® published a new TLV®: Upper Limb Localized Fatigue.  The purpose of the TLV® is to provide employers and health and safety professionals with guidance for preventing upper extremity musculoskeletal fatigue among workers who perform cyclical work for two or more hours per day.  The TLV® is based on combinations of force, exertion time and frequency that have been found to be acceptable for repetitive work.  Exposure limits of job risk factors are presented that will allow most healthy workers to maintain their work capacity and normal performance for the duration of the workday without experiencing excessive, persistent fatigue.  Deficits that occur during the workday should be reversibly resolved during the daily breaks from work, allowing for typical life activities beyond work.  Excessive fatigue may be experienced as pain, decreased strength, localized discomfort, tremor or other symptoms or signs of reduced motor control.  This webinar will present an introduction to localized fatigue, the scientific basis for the TLV®, methods of determining force patterns, application of the TLV® and several case studies that apply to the TLV®.  At the conclusion of the presentation, there will be time for questions and comments.



After participating in this webinar, attendees will be able to:

• Understand aims and basis of the TLV®

• Understand the scientific data underpinning the TLV®

• Understand methods for measuring force patterns

• Be able to apply and interpret the TLV® to measured workloads

• Be able to make recommendations to employers based on the TLV®

David M. Rempel, MD, MPH, CPE will present this webinar.

David M. Rempel, MD, MPH, CPE is Professor of Bioengineering at the University of California at Berkeley and Professor Emeritus of Medicine at UC San Francisco in the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.  He is Board certified in internal medicine, occupational medicine and ergonomics.  His research focuses on hand biomechanics and the design of tools and tasks in order to improve productivity and the quality of work while preventing hand and arm fatigue and injury.  Dr. Rempel is a member of the ACGIH® Threshold Limit Values for Physical Agents Committee and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Board on Human Systems Integration.  Publications and descriptions of research projects can be found at http://ergo.berkeley.edu.

Thomas J. Armstrong, PhD, CIH is professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan.  He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a Certified Professional Ergonomist.  His research is generally concerned with biomechanics as it relates to understanding and preventing musculoskeletal disorders, to the design of work equipment and procedures – especially for those with special needs.  Dr. Armstrong is a member of the ACGIH® Threshold Limit Values for Physical Agents Committee.



This webinar contains 1 hour of instruction and may be eligible for ABIH CM credit.  See the ABIH website (www.abih.org) for CM credit criteria.
