ANAB Offers Accreditation for Basel Action Network's e-Stewards® Certification Program

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) - American Society for Quality (ASQ) National Accreditation Board (ANAB) is now offering accreditation for the e-Stewards® Certification Program developed by the Basel Action Network.

The e-Stewards Standard is for use by organizations that have electronics recycling, processing, asset management, and refurbishment operations. The standard was developed by the environmental community in conjunction with industry experts in recycling and refurbishment, data security, worker health and safety, and auditing.

ANAB, the U.S. accreditation body for management systems, will provide oversight of third-party certification bodies that become accredited to conduct audits and issue certificates of conformance to electronic recycling organizations that successfully demonstrate they meet the requirements of the e-Stewards Standard.

"The e-Stewards Standard provides a means to respond to the need for responsible disposal of electronics waste, and ANAB's oversight of the certification program is intended to build confidence and value for consumers," Randy Dougherty, ANAB vice president, said.

"The Basel Action Network greatly values the accreditation oversight that ANAB brings to the e-Stewards Certification Program," Sarah Westervelt, e-Stewardship director for the Basel Action Network, said. "This will enhance the level of credibility of the program leading to greater confidence and value for all stakeholders worldwide."

To apply for ANAB's e-Stewards accreditation, certification bodies must have an office located in North America and be accredited by ANAB or another national accreditation body recognized by the International Accreditation Forum to provide certification to ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management systems. Certification body auditors must successfully complete training established by the Basel Action Network prior to performing audits for e-Stewards certification.

ANAB's accreditation requirements for e-Stewards certification were developed by a Committee of Experts that included representatives of the recycling industry, certification bodies, the Basel Action Network, and ANAB.
