Paper Competition Announced for U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day 2010
Press release date: February 19, 2010
Papers addressing "Standards for Accessibility" are due by July 23
The 2010 World Standards Day Paper Competition has been announced by the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day Planning Committee and the paper competition's sponsor, the Standards Engineering Society (SES).
The theme for this year's paper competition, "Standards for Accessibility," recognizes the critical role of model codes, standards, and conformity assessment activities in developing and maintaining the built environment, products, technologies, and systems that are accessible for persons with special needs.
The different abilities and needs of people across the country have led to a myriad of accessibility issues and requirements in every industry. From technologies that are user-friendly for the deaf and blind communities, to physical environments that are accessible to persons with physical disabilities, to products that can be easily used by the elderly, accessibility solutions allow for the greatest number of people to enjoy many aspects of everyday life that may otherwise be unmanageable.
Standards have a critical influence on accessibility across all industries and around the globe. The 2010 World Standards Day Paper Competition invites members of the standardization community to submit papers that use specific examples to show ways that standards and conformity assessment programs are used to promote accessibility in any form for persons with special needs.
Paper competition winners will be announced and given their awards during a banquet at the celebration, which will be held this year on September 23 at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C.
Cash prizes will be awarded for the best three papers submitted. The first place winner will receive a plaque and $2,500. Second and third place winners will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively, along with a certificate. In addition, the winning papers will be published in SES's journal, Standards Engineering.
All paper contest submissions must be received with an official entry form by midnight on July 23, 2010, by Leona Nisbet, SES Executive Director, 1950 Lafayette Road, Box 1, Portsmouth, New Hampshire 03801.
