ABB Wins Substations Order With Hydro One in Canada

New power infrastructure to integrate conventional and distributed generation and help reinforce transmission grid

Zurich, Switzerland - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a major order from Hydro One Networks Inc., the power transmission and distribution utility of the Canadian province of Ontario, to supply an indoor gas-insulated switchgear substation, an outdoor switchyard with air-insulated switchgear and associated transmission infrastructure. The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The new substations will replace an existing installation built in the 1950's and will serve Canada's largest city Toronto. They will connect the existing Portlands Energy Center generation station and enhance grid reliability.

"The new substations will enable the integration of diverse power generation sources and boost power supply to the region," said Oleg Aleinikov, head of ABB's substations business, a part of the company's Power Systems division.

ABB's scope of supply includes 115 kilovolt (kV) gas-insulated and air-insulated switchgear, surge arresters, transformers, and cables. As part of the turnkey contract, ABB is responsible for the system studies, design, engineering, supply and installation of the substations, including civil works. The project is scheduled for completion by 2013.

Hydro One Networks Inc. owns and operates 96 percent of Ontario's transmission network. The network has 280 transmission substations, a distribution system spanning around 75 percent of the province, with 1,010 distribution substations and 26 facilities that interconnect the transmission grid with neighboring provinces to enable power trading.

ABB is the world's leading supplier of turnkey air-insulated, gas-insulated and hybrid substations with voltage levels up to 1,100 kV. These substations facilitate the efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity with minimum environmental impact, serving utility, industry and commercial customers as well as sectors like railways, urban transportation and renewables.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact.
