ABB Expands UL Recognition for VersaRupter Portfolio

ABB answers the industry need for UL rating on indoor switches and expands their portfolio for a greater offering.

Houston, Texas – ABB, the leading power and automation technology company, received authorization to apply the UR mark to all VersaRupter switches rated 4.76/15/17 kV, 200/600/1200A. The UR mark is being applied to any new builds manufactured after September 8, 2014.

Customers can utilize these UR marked component switches in situations requiring UL ratings for safety and conformance specifications. When a complete product or system containing UR components is evaluated the evaluation process is simplified for the benefit of end-customers. End-product manufacturers can opt to use components that have received UR Certified testing to avoid repeat testing for the end-product certification.

Testing has been conducted in accordance with UL protocols and industry standards. VersaRupters rated 4.76-17 kV up to 1200 A were tested to the IEEE C37.20.4-2013 standard for indoor AC switches for use in metal-enclosed switchgear. The tests were also witnessed by UL in compliance with test procedures of ANSI C37.58-2003.

"ABB’s commitment towards continuous improvement inspires us to help our customers improve their operational performance and productivity," said Terry Neighbours, Medium Voltage Product Manager for ABB. "This new rating allows our indoor switches to be applied in many more applications."

The VersaRupter switch has the most mechanical operations, exceeding the IEEE requirements twice over at 1000 operations, and is now available for UL-rated gear. It also has the smallest footprint of any load break switch at standard ratings and is the only load break switch on the market with a combined air- and gas-blast to extinguish an arc when opening under load. This combination allows the VersaRupter to achieve a small footprint without phase barriers for most ratings. For more information on the VersaRupter switch visit http://bit.ly/VersaRupter.

This announcement was made at the ABB Automation Power World conference and exhibition, ABB’s bi-annual customer event held this year in Houston.
