Brown, Martinovich Elected to Lead AASHTO in 2010



Association's First Female VP among the Chosen

Larry L. "Butch" Brown, Executive Director of the Mississippi Department of Transportation, was elected as the new AASHTO President on Monday, with Susan Martinovich, P.E., Director, Nevada Department of Transportation, chosen as Vice President.

Brown, the 2009 AASHTO Vice-President, has been involved with several AASHTO leadership initiatives and served as Chairman of the AASHTO Standing Committee on Water Transportation. He has identified four emphasis areas for the association in 2010:

Enactment of a well-funded, multi-year federal surface transportation program;

Environment and sustainability;

Transeconomy: Freight transportation + economy = jobs; and Education: Communicating the value of transportation

Brown was appointed to the position of executive director in January 2001 by the three-member elected Mississippi Transportation Commission. The Mississippi DOT has responsibility for airport and port development, highway construction and maintenance, trucking enforcement, public transit, and rail safety.

A graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi with degrees in management and marketing, Brown served in the school's department of marketing and management as an instructor for seven years. After leaving USM, Brown established a successful business career in the areas of transportation, warehousing, real estate wholesaling, and the hotel trade. He was also elected Mayor of Natchez, Mississippi serving in that position from 1992-2000.

Susan Martinovich is the Association's first female Vice President. She has worked for the Nevada Department of Transportation for more than 25 years. As Director, she is responsible for the daily operations of the department that has an annual operating budget of $674 million and 1,700 employees.

She currently serves as chair of the AASHTO Standing Committee on Research, vice-chair for the Standing Committee on Highway Traffic Safety, and chair of the Leadership and Engineering Management Committee. She is a member of the Transportation Research Board Executive Committee. She is also a member of many other Transportation Research Board committees, including the Oversight Committee for SHRP-II, which will oversee the national research activities identified in SAFETEA-LU.

Martinovich has a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno, and is a licensed professional engineer in Nevada and California.
