Yaskawa Expands the Sigma AC Servo System Product Family for Larger Torque Direct Drive Motors

Waukegan, IL - Yaskawa Electric America, Inc. is pleased to announce the expansion of the Sigma Series servo system product line for more powerful, higher positioning accuracy, direct drive factory automation applications. This product line realizes up to 5310 in. lb. peak torque and up to 500 rpm max. without gearboxes utilizing the latest advances in motor design and amplifier power electronics. In many semiconductor, material handling, high-speed assembly, and packaging processing lines, the Direct Drive SGMCS product line will provide faster, more accurate positioning for rotary table, assembly, inspection and test equipment. It also provides a programmable alternative to the fixed motion of a traditional mechanical cam indexer.

The Direct Drive SGMCS servomotors include:

o Six frame sizes, seventeen models ranging from 15 in.lb. peak in a 135mm diameter package to 5310 in.lb. peak torque in a 360mm diameter
o Up to 500 rpm max.
o High precision 20-bit (1,048,576 ppr) resolution per rotation
o A higher torque, low noise, no backlash, gearless construction
o A hollow space in the motor can be used for wiring and piping

The size of the machine's drive section is reduced due to the compact nature of the motor construction and the ability to directly drive higher torque loads. No homing is necessary with use of the absolute encoder function. For this reason, higher torque AC servo performance is now available where previous choices had been limited to motors with gearboxes, timing belts, cam boxes, etc.

The corresponding Sigma II power amplifiers provide increased flexibility and ease of integration with the machine automation. The all-digital amps are digitally configured for either torque, speed, or position control, or use of application specific modules. Sigma II's open control interfaces provide for simple integration with stepper indexers, PC-based controls, motion controls, and PLCs, including add-on Fieldbus application modules. Sigma II add-on application modules (Indexer, DeviceNet, Profibus, MP940 1.5 Axis Machine Controllers) will plug-in to the expansion port on the side of the amplifier and provide easier integration. Amplifier auto tuning allows for fast setup of the amplifiers, while adaptive tuning actually adjusts parameters while the machine operates. The servo amplifier reads the servomotor ID, indicating type and capacity, and automatically sets parameters. Terminals for field installed external regenerative resistors and optional dynamic brake units are provided. The amplifiers are designed to minimize control panel space and continue to operate at rated torques in cabinet ambient temperatures as high as 55°C without overload.

In 1967, Yaskawa Electric America, Inc., a U. S. corporation, was created to provide automation solutions and support to customers in North and South America. Established in 1915, Yaskawa Electric Corporation has been leading the way in setting the industry's standards including becoming the world's first company to have manufactured and shipped over 10-million AC drives to go along with another 5,000,000 servomotors. Yaskawa holds international quality excellence awards, including the prestigious Deming Application Prize and its products are manufactured in ISO-9001:2000 registered facilities.
