World's Brighest Minds in Welding to Meet in July

International Institute of Welding will hold 65th Annual Assembly in Denver, Colo.

MIAMI, Fla., - The International Institute of Welding (IIW) will hold its Annual Assembly from July 8-13, 2012, in Denver, Colorado. Although the event is in its 65th year, it has only been held in the United States three times, most recently in 1997. The upcoming meeting will provide a special opportunity for those involved in welding and allied joining technologies to meet with their counterparts from all over the world. The IIW's strong network of experts includes engineers and academics from major international universities and research institutes, as well as top R&D personnel and executives from leading global companies.

During the Annual Assembly week, the IIW's 23 technical working units provide a unique framework for discussions and presentations about the latest technological innovations and pioneering advances in the field. The various groups focus on all key aspects of materials joining and "hot topics" that are of prime relevance to industry, within the scope of the main areas of Processes, Design and Structural Integrity and Human Factors.

The International Institute of Welding was founded in 1948 by the welding institutes of 13 countries (including the U.S.) to promote the best materials joining practices on a worldwide level. Today, with 55 member countries, the IIW has become a global reference, providing a respected forum for the exchange of information, know-how, experience and solutions among specialists involved in the research, development and application of welding and allied joining technologies.

The IIW's knowledge transfer continues to benefit a wide range of industrial sectors: shipbuilding, aerospace, automotive and rail transportation, construction and infrastructure, wind/nuclear energy, oil and gas, steel production, process equipment, amongst others.

The 2012 IIW Annual Assembly will be officially hosted by the IIW American Council, which consists of the American Welding Society (AWS), the Edison Welding Institute, and the Welding Research Council. AWS has put together a planning committee of American Council members and other welding experts to ensure a successful event. The planning committee is co-chaired by AWS Past-Presidents Damian Kotecki and Tom Mustaleski. Dr. Kotecki is also IIW Treasurer and AWS Executive Director Ray Shook currently serves as one of the IIW's Vice-Presidents.

The 2012 event in Denver presents a special opportunity for welding and joining experts throughout North America to attend a world welding summit. In addition to networking with eminent materials joining specialists at meetings, social events and technical visits, attendees will have the opportunity to attend a major IIW International Conference from July 12 - 13, "Welding for Repair and Life Extension of Plants and Infrastructure."

For the first time ever, the IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference have gone mobile. The 2012 Denver Annual Assembly has launched a smartphone mobile app called "IIW 2012" to give attendees a convenient way to navigate the event. The app provides participants with necessary information including: speaker lists, floor plan maps and an interactive schedule. In addition, the app allows social media interaction with a live feed of Tweets and a photo gallery where attendees can snap pictures and upload for all to see. The app is available for iPhone, Blackberry and Google Android phones.
