W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.-A workshop on Thermal Methods for Prediction of Properties of Cementitious Systems will be held Dec. 2 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta in Atlanta, Ga. Sponsored by ASTM International Subcommittees C01.48/C09.48 on Performance of Cementitious Materials and Admixture Combinations, the workshop will be held in conjunction with the standards development meetings of Committees C01 on Cement and C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates.
Thermal measurements are increasingly used as research and trouble shooting tools to capture the hydration kinetics of cementitious mixtures. As the cementitious binder reacts with water, it releases heat that can be measured either as heat flow (ASTM C1679, Standard Practice for Measuring Hydration Kinetics of Hydraulic Cementitious Mixtures Using Isothermal Calorimetry, using isothermal calorimetry) or a temperature rise, resulting in a "fingerprint" of the reactivity of the mixture tested at the current conditions. The workshop will discuss popular applications that include:
· Sulfate optimization of cement; · Effect of temperature on hydration rate; · Strength prediction using maturity (ASTM C1704, Standard Test Method for Sampling and Testing Structural Cementitious Panels); · Incompatibility (ASTM C1679); · Set time estimation; · Finishing time and saw cutting time prediction; and · Mix design optimization (selection of admixture and SCM).
Online registration opens approximately eight weeks before the workshop and closes Nov. 28. There is attendance fee for ASTM members, presenters and students with a valid ID. The fee for non-ASTM members is $50 USD for online registration and $75 USD onsite.
