Wind River Furthers Industry Leadership in Linux with New Support for the AMD Opteron(TM) Processor-Based Sun Netra ATCA Blade Server

Device Software Optimization Leader Extends Linux Network Equipment Software Platform with Support for Sun's Netra(TM) ATCA® Blade Server

ALAMEDA, Calif., June 5 / / - Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), today announced that the Wind River® Platform for Networking Equipment, Linux Edition, will be optimized to support the Netra CP3020, Sun Microsystems' AMD Opteron(TM) processor-based ATCA blade server. The combination of a Wind River run-time platform on a Sun Netra-based system offers greater flexibility for network equipment providers (NEPs) and service providers worldwide and delivers higher service availability, faster time-to-market, reduced development costs and lower total cost of operations. Working with Sun Microsystems and AMD to deliver this solution, Wind River reaffirms its commitment to meeting the demands of NEPs by offering commercially available Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) solutions for next-generation infrastructures.

For customers who require a commercial-grade CGL solution on the industry's fastest, densest and most reliable blade server, Wind River is working on an optimized port of its Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition environment for Sun's Netra ATCA blade server and AMD Opteron processor-based Sun Netra blade systems. Sun's Netra family is designed for both density - saving up to 10 inches, or 30% space per rack -and exceptional reliability. The Sun Netra CP3020 is built on the ATCA specification to ensure that the platform is optimized for system modularity and scalability and improved thermal and power management.

"With the addition of Wind River's Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition operating system, Sun expands the choice of carrier grade operating systems and world-class embedded development tools supported on our Netra ATCA blade server to address the needs of network equipment providers and service providers worldwide," said Raju Penumatcha, Netra Systems and Networking, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "We look forward to working closely with Wind River and AMD to expand our mutual presence in the fast-growing ATCA blade server market."

"AMD's telecommunications customers will welcome the addition of Wind River's CGL support to Sun's ATCA standards-based blade server, which takes full advantage of the powerful AMD Opteron processor to meet the specific demands of telecommunications industry applications," said David Rich, director of 64-bit embedded markets at AMD. "The AMD Opteron processor with Direct Connect Architecture gives our telecommunications customers innovative native 64-bit and multi-core computing, industry leading x86 performance-per- watt and full scalability and reliability, all at a cost that yields a high return on investment."

Based on a CGL distribution, Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition, integrates with many of the industry's most popular telecommunications boards, making it an ideal fit for the telecommunications and high-end data networking markets. It supports the emerging PICMG 3.x ATCA specification and various high-availability functions, and includes a standards-based interprocess communication (IPC) mechanism that connects the Linux and VxWorks editions of the platform. This tested and validated Linux platform is supported and maintained by Wind River.

"Wind River's value to Linux customers is the 'commercial grade' quality of our platform," said Ken Klein, president, chief executive officer and chairman at Wind River. "Other vendors offer commercial Linux distributions, but only Wind River makes commercial grade quality a reality for customers with comprehensive solutions that include market-leading development and runtime products, world-class Linux-based professional services and global product support delivered via local technology experts."
