Press release date: February 4, 2008

4th February 2008, Milton Keynes, UK - Aculab, a leading provider of enabling technology for the communications market, and Skunkworks, an innovative telephony solution developer, are pleased to announce that Whirlwind telephony software is now available free of charge, as a trial download, to enable users to start switching calls on Prosody X cards in just 10 minutes.

Telephony businesses can now build and deploy new services on Prosody X cards very quickly and cost effectively, freeing up their resources to focus more on the value added aspects of the target solution to start generating revenue sooner. Prosody X is Aculab's high performance IP and media processing card, enabling up to 1200 channels of IP as well as 480 channels of ISDN/CAS/SS7 and media resources for voice, fax and conference per card.

Whirlwind is a distributed architecture telephony middleware communicating with Aculab cards and external systems such as databases, communications devices and legacy systems. It includes billing, reporting, monitoring, logging, debugging, error handling, multi-tasking, event synchronization and resource management. Users simply install the Prosody X telephony card into a server running Centos 4.5 Linux OS, then download 4 ports of trial Whirlwind free of charge from www.prosodyxin10minutes.com, plug in the carrier and start switching calls.

"The idea is to empower telephony businesses to launch their solutions quickly to start generating revenue sooner than previously possible while also eliminating the development costs," said Bill Oborn, Director of Skunkworks Australia, the software development house behind the initiative. "Choice, flexibility and speed to market are imperative for business today," said Oborn. "Businesses are now more often looking for ways to deploy new telephony services in a shorter time using the tools they are familiar with and not have to worry about the lower level telephony hardware layer which is what Whirlwind does."

The Whirlwind API enables users to write services in their preferred language such as C, Java, PHP, .NET etc running in their preferred operating system. Alternatively or concurrently, they can also use Whirlwind's on-board Telco Perl application engine. Telco Perl enables users to write telephony applications using the open source Perl language; it compiles and caches the scripts to run in Whirlwind thereby combining the endless flexibility of Perl with the telco grade Whirlwind environment. With millions of Perl users across the world Whirlwind and Prosody X can now be deployed quickly and easily without users needing to learn a proprietary, single purpose application language.

"This higher level of flexibility is a real time and money saver for businesses moving to the Prosody X technology," said Ian Colville, Product Manager at Aculab. "Solutions such as Interactive Voice Response, Centrex, Pre-Paid, Web Dial, Fax Broadcast, Follow-me, Queuing-In-The-Cloud, Wake-Up-Call, Virtual Office, Conferencing, Contact Centre solutions, etc., can now be built quickly and easily without your technical staff having to learn new highly specialized programming languages. Prosody X is proving increasingly popular in the market and Whirlwind provides an easy path for businesses to launch a new service quickly and cost effectively - this flexibility and speed to market is crucial for them to be able to create a competitive advantage." Colville concluded.
