Intelligent dataTaker System from CAS DataLoggers

CHESTERLAND OH - Water disruptions typically occur after a large amount of water has rapidly collected in a catchment area. As a result this water is subject to continual monitoring and testing for a variety of chemical and biological agents as well as clarity, rate of movement, and water levels for environmental management. Turbidity, conductivity, temperature, pH, level and flow sensors are all commonly utilized for data logging, but this data retrieval process must also be simple and easily accessible to minimize staff training times and to prevent schedule delays. CAS DataLoggers recently helped a customer with this application to find the most cost-effective automated solution and connect to all the different sensor types.

After talking with a CAS DataLoggers Applications Specialist, the customer installed a dataTaker DT82E Intelligent Environmental Data Logger in a waterproof enclosure adjacent to the dam's retention area. Designed with environmental applications in mind, the dataTaker was then connected to a wide variety of turbidity, conductivity, temperature, pH, level and flow sensors and began taking readings. The low-power DT82E recorded and stored all these water quality parameters which were then web interfaced allowing users to configure, access and view measurements as mimics or in a list using a web browser. Throughout, the dataTaker's rugged construction protected it from rough handling and even accidents.

The stand alone data logger featured USB memory stick support, 18 bit resolution, extensive communications capabilities and a built-in display listing current readings. The logger's FTP capability remotely sent the data to the dam's office via the internet or mobile phone network without the customer needing to purchase any polling or specific host software. Additionally, the data logger stored up to 10 million data points in its user-defined memory so that the dataTaker could log as much or as little as required while allowing independent control of schedule size and mode. Users could also overwrite or stop logging once the allocated memory was full, and choose to archive data on alarm event or copy to USB memory.

In future, the customer planned to use the datalogger to log other environmental and weather parameters using their combined SDI-12 weather transmitter, including wind speed, wind direction, humidity, air temperature, solar radiation, and rainfall. With support for SDI-12 sensor networks, TCP, and 12V regulated output to power sensors, the DT82E arrived ready to be rolled out into all of these environmental projects.
