Wastewater Treatment Plant Chooses Radar Level Transmitter to Monitor and Control Its Influent Water Flow

Ohio Municipality Has Selected Flow Line Options' Tracer 1000, an Advanced Radar Level Transmitter, for its Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The radar level system is currently being used to accurately measure the influent water flow at the plant.

CLEVELAND, OH - Flow Line Options Corp. (Flo-Corp), a leading manufacturer and national supplier of measurement and control instrumentation, today announced that the City of New Philadelphia, Ohio Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) has selected Tracer 1000(TM) for its influent water flow system. Featuring Time Domain Reflectometry, commonly known as TDR, the Tracer 1000 provides continuous radar level measurement and point level detection in liquids, with analog and switching output.

Tracer 1000 is well-suited for a diverse range of level applications and has almost no installation restrictions. The device has a 1" radar beam that can be mounted in small tanks, tall and narrow nozzles and it measures precisely even with difficult tank geometries or close to interfering structures.

The new radar level technology was installed by the City of New Philadelphia as part of its overall initiative to address increased flows to the wastewater plant. The Tracer 1000 analog output is connected to a field mounted monitor which allows plant operations to verify onsite influent flow rates. The flow monitor also reports back to the plant SCADA system using integral 4-20 mA output.

The accuracy of the radar level system at the WWTP is extremely important and the data collected has helped addressed an ongoing problem with I & I (infiltration and inflow). The information collected by the radar level system is used to determine the amount of water coming into the plant. The plant processes an average flow of 3 MGD with a design capacity of 5 MGD.

"The new radar system works really good - I would like to use it in a few lift stations," said Kevin Smith, Chief Operator at the New Philadelphia WWTP. The radar level system is currently being used in a wet-well application. Smith further explained that, "The [Tracer 1000] is better than other products used in the past, plus there is no concern with mist."

"I am very pleased with the overall performance of Flow Line Options' radar level device," said Tom Fisher, Technician with Fenton Brothers' Electric who installed the device. "The [Tracer 1000] is so easy to install and delivers reliable measurements, regardless of the applications environment," added Fisher.

About New Philadelphia WWTP
The City of New Philadelphia's Wastewater Treatment Plant is an activated sludge type secondary treatment with disinfection, sludge handling, and dewatering. It is designed for a 90% to 95% removal of raw organic material and suspended solids. It accepts a normal sewage influent. The results of the operation of the treatment plant must satisfy the effluent limitations set for the plant in accordance with the National Pollutant Discharge Permit issued by the Ohio EPA.
