Wallace Munden Receives ASTM International Award of Merit from Concrete Pipe Committee
W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.–ASTM International Committee C13 on Concrete Pipe has presented the Award of Merit to Wallace J. Munden, former vice president (retired) of Scurlock Industries in Springfield, Mo. The Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.
Munden has been a member of ASTM International and Committee C13 since 1994. He works on several C13 subcommittees and was chairman of Subcommittee C13.07 on Acceptance Specifications and Precast Concrete Box Sections from 2002-2010 and a member at large on the C13.90 Executive Subcommittee from 2005-2011. He has provided significant technical knowledge in the development of several concrete pipe standards, including ASTM C1577, Specification for Precast Reinforced Concrete Monolithic Box Sections for Culverts, Storm Drains and Sewers Designed According to AASHTO LRFD, an important standard in the precast concrete industry. In 2005, he was honored with the Merlin G. “IB” Spangler Award for his contributions to the committee.
A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., where he received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Munden began his career as an associate engineer at Duke Power Co., Charlotte, N.C., in 1969. He went on to work for the city of Springfield, Mo., as principal civil engineer before joining Scurlock Industries in 1982. Munden, who specializes in the design and manufacturing of precast concrete infrastructure products, retired from Scurlock in 2010 after 28 years of service.
Outside ASTM International, Munden is a member of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the American Concrete Pipe Association, the American Public Works Association, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers.
