Voluntary Standards apply to humidifiers and power plants.

Press Release Summary:

To help manufacturers, specifiers, installers, and users of central system residential humidifiers determine capacity of residential humidifiers, ASHRAE published ANSI/ASHRAE 64.2-2012, Method of Test for Residential Self-Contained Humidifiers. Also, ISA recently released ANSI/ISA 7.20.01-2012, Fossil Fuel Power Plant Simulators - Functional Requirements, which establishes functional requirements for several types of plant-specific, fossil fuel power plant control room simulators.

Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Humidifiers to Power Plants

New York

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes a series of snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Humidifiers

Humidifiers are found in many American homes to increase moisture levels in the air, particularly in the winter when the air naturally holds less moisture. They aid in combating dryness of the skin, lips, throat, and sinuses, and can help ease symptoms of a cold, asthma, allergies, or another respiratory condition.

To aid manufacturers, specifiers, installers, and users of central system residential humidifiers in determining the capacity of residential humidifiers, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recently published ANSI/ASHRAE 64.2-2012, Method of Test for Residential Self-Contained Humidifiers. The American National Standard (ANS) covers a test method for the humidification rate of residential self-contained humidifiers that do not require other mechanical devices, and are not connected to the central heating/ventilation system. ANSI/ASHRAE 64.2-2012 describes the test apparatus, conduct of the test, and information to be recorded. Tests covered include methods for measuring energy input, water flow rate, water temperature, and water pressure to the test humidifier.

ASHRAE, an ANSI organizational member and audited designator, is an international organization that works promote a sustainable world through research, standards, recommended procedures and guidelines, continuing education, and publishing technical information.

Power Plants

The majority of thermal power stations in the world use fossil fuel – coal, natural gas, or petroleum/oil. To increase safety and efficiency while maximizing output, many plants have instituted simulator programs that offer valuable "hands-on” training and preparedness for plant operators without the need to operate the actual control panels and plant systems.

The International Society of Automation (ISA) recently released ANSI/ISA 7.20.01-2012, Fossil Fuel Power Plant Simulators - Functional Requirements, which establishes the functional requirements for several types of plant-specific, fossil fuel power plant control room simulators. It sets minimum criteria for the degree of software modeling detail and hardware replication, performance, and functional capabilities of the simulator control room operator interfaces. The scope of ANSI/ISA 7.20.01-2012 covers the simulation of fossil fuel power plants typically consisting of boiler, turbine, and balance of plant with steaming capacities of 200,000 lbs/hr or greater; combustion turbine or combined cycle combustion turbine capacity of greater than 100MWs; and, associated or interactive processes.

ISA, an ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer, is a global non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the technology and increasing the safety, security, and performance of instrumentation and automation systems through the development and promotion of national and international standards.
