Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: From Recreational Boating to Healthcare Professional Profiles

In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will publish, on an ongoing basis, a series of snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:

Recreational Boating

Water sports and recreational boating are staples of summertime fun. According to the United States Coast Guard Boating Safety Division there are nearly 13 million recreational boating vessels registered in the U.S. Ensuring safety in the design, construction, maintenance and repair of recreational boats is the mission of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), an ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer.

Three recent additions to ABYC's family of voluntary consensus standards provide guidelines for the selection, design, construction and installation of various features that will aid in keeping boating safe and enjoyable:

ANSI/ABYC H-3-2008, Exterior Windows, Windshields, Hatches, Doors, Port Lights, and Glazing Materials

ANSI/ABYC H-32-2008, Ventilation of Boats Using Diesel Fuel

ANSI/ABYC H-40-2008, Anchoring, Mooring and Strong Points

In addition to developing and updating safety standards for building and repairing boats, ABYC provides education, seminars and workshops for the marine industry, as well as certification programs for marine technicians. ABYC's membership includes boat builders and owners, surveyors, boat yards, insurance companies, law firms, trade associations, marinas, dealerships, government agencies, educational institutions, and equipment and accessory manufacturers.

Healthcare Professional Profiles

Verifying the professional credentials of doctors and other healthcare providers is a critical process in ensuring consumers receive high quality healthcare during routine exams and when responding to catastrophes such as terrorism or natural disaster. A recently released standard from ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer MedBiquitous will facilitate regulatory bodies and health care institutions to authenticate provider qualifications, improve medical response in times of crisis, and catch fraudulent practitioners.

ANSI/MEDBIQ PP.10.1-2008, Healthcare Professional Profile, provides a standard XML format for profile data on healthcare professionals. The new standard enables the exchange and compilation of profile data across organizations allowing for faster credentialing of professionals, and faster availability of accurate data to the public. The Healthcare Professional Profile provides a common format for various types of data including identifiers, name, address, education, training, certification, licensure, disciplinary actions, academic appointments, occupation, personal information and professional memberships. ANSI/MEDBIQ PP.10.1-2008 can be downloaded free of charge from the MedBiquitous website.

MedBiquitous works to create a technology blueprint for healthcare education based on XML and web services standards to aid the healthcare industry in improving patient care and simplifying the administrative work associated with education and competence assessment. The international non-profit organization also provides a forum for educators and industry to exchange ideas about technologies for healthcare education and communities of practice that will advance healthcare education and promote professional competence, collaboration, and better patient care.
