Vision Engineering Ltd is helping to turn new product ideas into commercially successful reality, through their new Manufacturing Services division ...
The Government is very keen to emphasise that the economic future for Britain lies in the "knowledge based economy" and "value added technologies" as a balance against the country's overdependence on financial services and other invisible earnings. The government's recent announcement of a £200 million investment in a national network of technology and innovation centres aims to kick start the transition from an economy dominated by banking and service industries, to a more Germanic model where high tech manufacturing is at the centre of government policy.
Whilst there is no doubt that this is a positive step for the high tech UK manufacturing sector, there is still a substantial gap between having a good technical idea and manufacturing a commercially successful product.
Vision Engineering Ltd has been manufacturing state-of-the-art industrial microscopes in Send and Woking for over 50 years, exporting 90% of its production to Blue Chip and SME customers across the globe. Founded in 1958, Vision Engineering has a history of technical innovation, receiving numerous accolades over the years for technological innovation, even featuring on the BBC's Tomorrow's World technology programme with their patented Mantis 'eyepieceless' microscope, as part of their end of season Prince of Wales Award for Industrial Innovation.
Having worked with many companies over the years keen to take advantage of Vision Engineering's expertise in optical, mechanical and electronic instrument design and manufacture, it was a natural progression to set-up a dedicated "Manufacturing Services" division to assist both established businesses and entrepreneurs access the latest manufacturing technologies, yet avoiding the pitfalls in developing a commercially successful high tech product.
Employing 120 staff in 2 sites in Surrey, with international offices across North America, Europe and Asia, Vision Engineering's Manufacturing Services division provides the full spectrum of design and manufacturing services, plus half a century of experience in the design and manufacture of technical instrumentation.
For example, the development of a prototype is just the beginning; patent and design protection is a vital, but costly, minefield, which requires experience to navigate. Products must also be designed and manufactured so that they can be competitively marketed and sold around the world and still make money for the owner of the idea or his/her original backers.
Managing Director, Mark Curtis says: "Vision Engineering has the experience, the design and manufacturing facilities and the commercial expertise to develop globally successful high technology instruments. It is entirely logical that we can offer all of these services to other companies so they may avoid the pitfalls in a taking an new, highly innovative product to market." adding, "We are not just talking about the process from initial concepts, through to prototypes and volume production. In the cold light of day, you must also research your markets well and assess at an early stage the overall commercial viability of a project. Even the best idea will fail if margins and distributions channels are not considered from day one!"
The results speak for themselves. Vision Engineering Manufacturing Services (VEMS) has designed, manufactured and helped launch equipment ranging from devices for diamond presentation in jewellery stores, to floor slip measuring instruments, force testers, automated assembly equipment and even model steam engines!
Vision Engineering Manufacturing Services welcomes approaches from entrepreneurs, technological developers and those with good product ideas for an initial, no cost analysis of product ideas with a view to establishing feasibility and potential returns.
Vision Engineering designs and manufactures eyepieceless and expanded pupil microscopes for laboratory and industrial applications. Established in 1958, more than 300,000 systems have been installed world-wide for inspection and measurement tasks. Company headquarters are based in Woking, UK with manufacturing facilities in the US and UK. Regional offices are located throughout North America, Japan, Europe and Southeast Asia.
