Vishay Intertechnology's MEPIC Resistor Named a 2014 EE Times and EDN ACE Award Finalist

MALVERN, Pa. – Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today announced that the company's Vishay Sfernice massive electro-pyrotechnic igniter chip (MEPIC) resistor has been named a UBM Tech 2014 EE Times and EDN ACE Award (http://ubm-ace.com/) finalist in the Ultimate Products: Passives, Interconnects, and Electromechanical category.

The EE Times and EDN ACE Awards honor the people and technologies that have made a difference in the electronics industry. Finalists for the Ultimate Products — awarded to the most significant products introduced in 2013 in 12 categories — were judged by a panel of EE Times and EDN editors, as well as industry experts. Final winners will be determined by the editors of UBM Tech and announced at the ACE Awards event, taking place on April 1 in San Jose, Calif., during EE Live!

For pyrotechnic engineers, Vishay's MEPIC resistor is specifically designed to convert electrical energy into heat energy in a precise electro-thermal profile for the purpose of initiating a series of pyrotechnic events in a controlled energetic reaction. The device is optimized for industrial electronic igniter applications in automotive safety systems; blasting in mining and tunneling; fireworks displays; building demolition; and more.

To lower costs, the MEPIC provides an alternative to bridge-wire devices. Available as a wraparound surface-mount resistor in the 0805 case size, the device consists of a NiCr foil applied to an epoxy-based substrate — an established technology used in the automotive industry — to simplify the design process. Due to its extremely fine manufacturing process and automatic optical inspection, the MEPIC product provides a very predictable and reproducible behavior to meet no-fire/all-fire conditions while withstanding ESD up to 25 kV without extra protection.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc., a Fortune 1000 Company listed on the NYSE (VSH), is one of the world's largest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors (diodes, MOSFETs, and infrared optoelectronics) and passive electronic components (resistors, inductors, and capacitors). These components are used in virtually all types of electronic devices and equipment, in the industrial, computing, automotive, consumer, telecommunications, military, aerospace, power supplies, and medical markets. Vishay's product innovations, successful acquisition strategy, and "one-stop shop" service have made it a global industry leader. Vishay can be found on the Internet at www.vishay.com.
