DENVER, Nov. 10 -- Vericept Corporation, the leading provider of comprehensive compliance and content control solutions, today announced the availability of a State Data Privacy solution to assist organizations with meeting State Data Privacy regulations for all states that have enacted Personal Information and privacy legislation.
Twenty states have followed California's lead by enacting State Data Privacy legislation and requiring businesses to notify their residents of security breaches. Vericept was the first content monitoring vendor to deliver a solution for California's Senate Bill 1386 and continues pioneering the industry with the introduction of this new solution.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, identity theft affects approximately 10 million Americans every year and cost $52.6 billion in 2004, most of which was incurred by businesses. Concerned with this growing statistic, several states have enacted laws to protect the Personal Information of their residents. These laws require businesses to notify residents of any security breach whereby an unauthorized individual has acquired unencrypted computerized Personal Information. Personal Information as defined by various state laws include:o An individual's first name or first initial in combination with the last name, and his or her last name in combination with one or more of the following data elements:o Social Security Numbero Driver's License number or State identification cardo Account number, credit card number, or debit card number alone or in combination with any required security code access code or password
"The proliferation of security breaches directly relating to identity theft continues to grow and now more than ever, businesses are legally responsible for ensuring their customer's Personal Information is protected," said Dave Parkinson, President and CEO of Vericept. "The introduction of our new State Data Privacy Solution enables businesses to protect customer data at the most granular levels while also helping to ensure full compliance with state regulations."
