New Developments Further Conserve Board Space, Reduce Weight and Power Consumption to Help Leading Satellite Manufacturers Reduce Payload Costs

MUNICH, Germany, Nov. 12 -- Vectron International, a leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of Frequency Control, Sensor, and Hybrid Product solutions, today announced several advancements across its space solutions portfolio. The launch of Vectron's PX-369 packaged crystal oscillator (PXO) and TX-309 temperature compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) product families, and enhancements to its breakthrough EX-209 evacuated miniature crystal oscillator (EMXO) offering further the company's efforts to help leading space application and satellite manufacturers drive down payload costs. Vectron will be showcasing these space solutions in Hall B5, Booth 237 at electronica 2008, November 11 to 14 in Munich, Germany.

"For more than 40 years, Vectron has dedicated our resources and leveraged our engineering and manufacturing expertise to provide premier frequency control solutions to the space industry," said Greg Smolka, vice president, Industrial, Military & Space business unit, Vectron. "As the industry continues to demand smaller footprints and lower power consumption without compromising performance, Vectron will continue to combine our unparalleled expertise in the crystal oscillator industry with our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities to offer customers the innovative solutions they need to solve their complex space timing requirements."

Vectron's proven high-reliability space solutions are represented in many leading space programs and have been designed into various space, communication and earth observation satellite applications including the Mars Pathfinder, Iridium satellites and Globalstar satellite phones, as well as in various space shuttle and manned space station projects. The company's new solutions leverage Vectron's deep space heritage to offer radiation tolerance to more than 100 kRads(Si) total dose, swept quartz in a four point crystal mount and MIL-PRF-55310, Class S or MIL-PRF-38534, Class K element evaluation, screening and quality conformance.

PXO provides extended frequency range for high-reliability space applications

With a nominal frequency range of 85 MHz to 160 MHz, Vectron's PX-369 PXO series essentially doubles the available frequency range of previous ACMOS frequency control devices. As a result, customers can reach their allotted bandwidth with less frequency multiplication and fewer parts, allowing them to preserve phase noise performance while saving cost, board space, weight and power consumption. The PX-369's low-profile flatpack enclosure (measuring 0.65" (W) x 0.65" (L) x 0.15" (H)), also provides a smaller, surface mount alternative to existing, through-hole, dual in-line packages traditionally used for the same applications. The new series can maintain stability of 100 ppm over all conditions, including military temperature range, over a 10-year life and is available in either +3.3V or +5V supply versions.

TCXO provides smaller footprint with no compromise to performance or quality assurance

Vectron's new TX-309 TCXO also addresses increasing demand for high-performance reference oscillators with minimal surface area. With a flatpack enclosure measuring just 0.79" (W) x 0.79" (L) x 0.49" (H), the TX-309 series offers satellite contractors and OEMs a smaller, surface mount alternative to existing DDIP TCXOs. The new TCXO also provides a significant increase in frequency range over the current industry standard. Prior to the TX-309 series, radiation-hardened ACMOS clocks were restricted to a maximum frequency of between 85 MHz to 100 MHz. Now, customers can take advantage of a nominal frequency range of 0.3 MHz to 150 MHz to reach their allotted bandwidth with fewer parts. Available for ordering in +3.3V, +5V or +15V supply versions, Vectron's TX-309 TCXOs can maintain a stability of 1 ppm over an operating temperature range of -20 degrees Celsius to +70 degrees Celsius.

EMXO now available up to 40 MHz

Further expanding the use of Vectron's patented EMXO technology into high reliability and space applications, Vectron's proven EX-209 EMXO series is now available in an expanded frequency range (up to 40 MHz) and with a close-in phase noise improvement option (-110 dBc/Hz at the 10 Hz offset for 10 MHz and 30 MHz devices with fixed frequency and sinewave output). The EX-209 series is currently being used in designs by leading satellite manufacturers for a range of applications, including defense and commercial satellites and deep space exploration, and has been proven to offer significant advantages in the areas of size, power and warm-up time over bulky oven controlled crystal oscillators (OCXOs) traditionally used in these applications. With this expanded frequency range, Vectron customers will now be able to further conserve board space and reduce frequency multiplication.

The EX-209 comes in a low-profile package (0.93" (W) x 1.03" (L) x 0.35" (H)), and provides low power consumption rates (less than 0.7 W at 25 degrees Celsius and less than 1.1 W at -40 degrees Celsius) and an impressive warm-up speed (3 minutes at 25 degrees Celsius), while offering a twenty-fold improvement in stability (up to 50 ppb) compared to similarly-sized TCXOs.
