Press release date: December 2, 2009

(Helsinki, Finland, December 2, 2009) The need for extremely accurate, precise and representative information about atmospheric changes is fundamental in order to understand the dynamics of climate change. The key parameters of change need to be measured over multi-decadal timescales and on geographical scales ranging from local to regional and global.

While the majority of Vaisala's measurement instruments and solutions are used for very precise monitoring of weather conditions and they support research into weather and climate, the company is also taking big steps to help the science community tackle the climate data challenge.

Vaisala's reference radiosonde is a device specifically developed to be used by the international climate community. The first parameter the instrument measures is water vapor, which is the most abundant and most important greenhouse gas in the Earth's atmosphere. Water vapor is also one of the most difficult parameters to measure with high precision and accuracy in the upper troposphere and stratosphere where the conditions are extremely cold and dry.

In addition to the development of the reference radiosonde, Vaisala has set out to meet the needs of long-term climate study by implementing a truly global lightning detection network and by building affordable in-situ CO2 sensors and automatic weather stations.

"Vaisala is committed to conducting responsible business in a responsible way. We do not expect commercial gain from the reference radiosonde project but regard it as a corporate responsibility contribution," says CEO and President of Vaisala Kjell Forsén. "As the leader in environmental measurement, we are in the best position to provide these exceptionally demanding measurement solutions, and proud to give our world-leading competence into use," he continues.

Vaisala is present in COP15, in the Bright Green Expo taking place at Forum Copenhagen on December 12-13, 2009 (Cleantech Finland exhibition stand no. 37).
