Upcoming Conference to Address Third-Party Food Safety Audit Criteria

Less than a month remains before Bolstering Consumer Confidence: Identifying Essential Third Party Food Safety Audit Criteria kicks off in Washington, DC. Co-sponsored by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the conference will spotlight the critical role that conformity assessment activities play in ensuring food safety.

Interested parties are invited to register now to join the 225 suppliers, retailers, consumer advocacy organizations, regulatory agencies and trade experts who are slated to participate in the December 2-3, 2008, meeting.

The two-day event will begin with discussions on third-party certification criteria from the public policy perspective, addressing U.S. Food and Drug Administration requirements and other considerations raised by organizations such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service and the World Trade Organization. A question and answer session at the end of the day will allow attendees to contribute their perspectives and ideas.

On day two, participants will discuss key issues and posit potential criteria for establishing and harmonizing a global food safety system. ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia will open the discussion, and Lane Hallenbeck, ANSI vice president of accreditation services, will sit on the morning's panel, "Improving Food Safety for Consumers: Establishing and Harmonizing a Global Food Safety System." Participants will have the opportunity to continue and build upon the panel's discussion in a series of concurrent breakout sessions to be held throughout the rest of day two.

Bolstering Consumer Confidence: Identifying Essential Third Party Food Safety Audit Criteria is sponsored by ANSI, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), the National Fisheries Institute (NFI), and the Seafood Products Association (SPA). The meeting will be held on December 2-3, 2008, at L'Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, DC. The event serves as a follow up to the Import Safety Summit, which was held in July 2008 to focus discussions on strengthening the public-private partnership for consumer safety.
