Press release date: October 7, 2008

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, October 7, 2008 -- HK Systems, Inc., North America's leading automated material handling and supply chain software total solutions provider, has been selected to provide a state-of-the-art Automated Library System (ALS) for the Joe and Rika Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago. This unique system will feature a traditional bin system for bound volumes together with an archival shelving system to house archival material.

The Joe and Rika Mansueto Library (ALS) will house 3.5 million volumes in one-seventh of the space required for conventional shelving. In an industry first, the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) will be built underground and consist of four HK Systems' mini-load and one HK unit-load Storage and Retrieval Machines (SRM). The automated solution will allow library patrons to request a volume via the library's circulation system. The SRM will retrieve materials from the storage system and bring the bin to one of eight pick stations via a lift, where library staff members will retrieve the requested volume from the bin and deliver to library patrons.

The Joe and Rika Mansueto Library (ALS) is scheduled to be completed by the autumn of 2010.
