Press release date: May 2, 2011

FREEPORT, NY - Sentry Electric, one of North America's most experienced and knowledgeable manufacturers of outdoor lighting luminaires, has provided the University of California at Berkeley with 1000 LED retrofit kits for its decorative post top luminaires. When fully deployed, UC Berkeley will have reduced their annual electrical demands by 744,600 kW, and the environment will have been spared 568 metric tons of CO2.

UC Berkeley's installation team is field retrofitting the SBP Battery Park tulip style luminaire with a top mounted, lensed LED array that provides either a Type V or Type II distribution. The installation process is being sequenced in phases, which balances labor costs with service, and insures that the campus remains illuminated during the project implementation phase.

The retrofitting of the luminaires with Sentry's LED solution offers a sustainable solution to UC Berkeley by:

o Negating the need to build entirely new luminaires and minimizing the contribution of scrap waste into local landfills.
o Reducing power consumption by 81%.
o Eliminating the use of metal halide lamps, which contain mercury.
o Decreasing the frequency of required luminaire maintenance, which impacts scrap waste due to lamp consumption as well as energy consumed in deploying maintenance vehicles.
o Complying with RoHS requirements for restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic components.

The directional light engine being utilized for UC Berkeley features a color temperature of 5000K, with a CRI of 80, flattering to people, objects, and structures. The rated life of 50,000 hours provides over ten years of maintenance free illumination.

"Sentry Electric's association with UC Berkeley goes back many years, and we are proud to have provided the university with its mainstay decorative post top luminaire," explained Shepard Kay, President of Sentry Electric. "With the evolution of LED technology, we are honored to have been chosen as the provider of the next generation of lighting for this beautiful campus. We are able to deliver a luminaire that offers sustainability, performance, reduced operating costs, and aesthetic value."

The addition of LEDs to Sentry Electric's product line expands the company's presence in energy saving solutions. Customers may also benefit from the use of induction sources, electronically ballasted HID, and compact fluorescent.

About UC Berkeley's Sustainable Initiatives:

UC Berkeley embarked on a major sustainability initiative several years ago, when Chancellor Robert Birgeneau made the greening of Berkeley one of his top priorities. He brought in a Director of Sustainability in 2007 to spearhead efforts to cut its greenhouse-gas emissions and reduce its carbon footprint. One of the key milestones of UC Berkeley's sustainability program is the adoption of the Cal Climate Action Partnership (CalCAP) goal of reducing emissions to 1990 levels by 2014, six years ahead of the state's mandated target.

UC Berkeley's efforts have yielded exemplary results as outlined in its progress report. Additionally, UC Berkeley has been recognized by Princeton Review's Green College Honor Roll as one of only 18 schools (out of a total of 703) to receive it highest score (99) when measuring environmental practices, policies, and course offerings.

According to a 2007 study, purchased electricity at UC Berkeley accounted for 30% of the university's greenhouse gas emissions. An aggressive campaign to retrofit old lighting luminaires in 30 buildings has already saved 572,155 kilowatt hours per year, according to a UC Berkeley report. With the LED retrofit program now being implemented, significant contributions will be made towards the long term goal of 40% reduction in total emissions..
