Tundra Licenses Ericsson's MicroTCA Carrier Hub Switching Sub System, Enabled by Serial RapidIO

OTTAWA, May 29 / -- Tundra Semiconductor Corporation, the leader in System Interconnect, today announced a collaboration with Ericsson, the leading wireless infrastructure provider, to license the Switching Module of a MicroTCA Carrier Hub (MCH) card, designed by Ericsson with Tundra's Tsi578(TM) Serial RapidIO® Switch. The license granted to Tundra includes sub-licensing rights and Tundra will be sub-licensing the design as the Tsi578 MicroTCA Switching Module (MSM), thereby broadening the availability of Serial RapidIO-based MicroTCA Systems.

Tundra announced the industry's first Serial RapidIO switch in 2005 and subsequently launched the world's first RapidIO interoperability lab in 2006. With today's announcement, Tundra, in collaboration with Ericsson, continues to build the Serial RapidIO and MicroTCA ecosystems. The Tsi578 MSM leverages the industry leading features of the Tsi578 16-port Serial RapidIO Switch and provides the switching functionality for a MicroTCA system.

Ericsson designed its MicroTCA carrier hub and associated backplane using Tundra Tsi578 Serial RapidIO switches with excellent support from Tundra's technical support team. The design is used by Ericsson in ongoing development activities.

"Ericsson selected Tundra for sub-licensing the design, not only because we used their Tsi578 for the card design, but also because we view Tundra as a key ecosystem enabler for RapidIO technology. We're confident that Tundra has the market presence to ensure wide-spread adoption of the design," said Gosta Lemne, Director, Head of Radio Systems & Terminals, Ericsson. He further adds that "Making state of the art technology developed by Ericsson available by entering into technology licensing arrangements is something that we view as an efficient way of utilizing selective results from our R&D activities".

"Networking OEM customers now have a ready-made MicroTCA option to enable faster design development and deployment. Tundra's Tsi578 MSM offering is another industry-first and a unique opportunity for customers to take advantage of the tested and proven MCH card, originally designed by Ericsson and now available for sub-license from Tundra. Making use of the Tundra Tsi578 Switch, the Tsi578 MSM leverages key features of Tundra's Serial RapidIO product family, which are critical to development of backplanes in wireless and wire line communication infrastructure. This standards-based solution will enable further adoption of RapidIO in MicroTCA systems," said Daniel Hoste, President and Chief Executive Officer, Tundra Semiconductor.

"RapidIO is a critical element in ATCA and MicroTCA systems. RapidIO has been winning in local chip-to-chip aggregation applications, with growth in the backplane and this is further evidence of the success of RapidIO in the backplane for wireless and wire line communication infrastructure" said Tom Cox, Executive Director, RapidIO Trade Association.
