Press release date: May 14, 2010

Culver City, Calif. - May 14, 2010 - DISC-LOCK International wheel nut technology, when installed correctly, will eliminate truck wheel loss.

On April 20, 2010, a waste truck experienced wheel separation causing a multi-vehicle crash while traveling on Highway 403 in Oakville, Ontario, Canada (near Toronto). One of the vehicles struck the wheel, rolled over and the driver was ejected. The driver was then airlifted to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto with critical injuries. The truck continued traveling on the highway and lost a second wheel. Three other vehicles struck the wheels but no other injuries were reported.

"Wheel separations from trucks, trailers and buses are an acute problem, causing accidents, injuries, property damage and fatalities," said Alistair McKinlay, Chairman of DISC-LOCK International. "The DISC-LOCK Safety Wheel Nut is an essential safety device and can prevent wheel loss thereby reducing accidents in this context. Truck and bus fleets offer a variety of excuses for not utilizing the Safety Wheel Nut, but this problem is easily solved. What if the accident referenced above occurred on a school bus filled with children?" added McKinlay. "Our Safety Wheel Nuts, when correctly installed, maintain their clamping force and will not loosen due to vibration and stress," said Greg White, Vice President of DISC-LOCK International. "A study administered by National Safety Transportation Board (NTSB) cites loose wheel nuts as one of the leading causes of wheel separations on medium and heavy vehicles." added White.

Truck fleets and transportation companies have been able to mitigate the penalties in law suits where there was a serious injury or a fatality from a wheel-off accident by agreeing to retrofit their fleets with DISC-LOCK Safety Wheel Nuts. About DISC-LOCK International
