Both Pluggable Optics and SFP-based Converters Enable Companies to Leverage Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet Applications

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 23 / The conversion technology and switching expert, Transition Networks Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Communications Systems, Inc., today announced a significant expansion to its popular SFP media converter product line, helping customers to easily upgrade their networks without losing their existing investments. The product expansion includes a number of additions to its small form-factor pluggable (SFP) product offering as well as the expanded availability of SFP-based media converters. With its protocol independent connectivity between fiber optical or copper links, customers are now able to leverage a range of networking applications including Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI, ESCON, SONET OC-3, OC-12, OC-48 and Fibre Channel.

"Transition's media converters and switches help protect the integrity and investment of today's networks while looking ahead to tomorrow," said Bill Schultz, vice president of marketing for Transition Networks. "And the ability to quickly change those SFP optics as needed in the future allows our customers to meet the challenge they face with rapidly evolving network topologies. Small form-factor pluggable optics combined with SFP-based media converters and switches allow for the utmost in product configuration, flexibility and convenience."

SFP Pluggable Optics

Transition's newest SFP pluggable optics (http://www.transition.com/sfp) additions include extended distance multimode 1000Base-SX models, which allow for optical transmission up to 2km over multimode fiber, as well as multi-rate Fibre Channel 2X models as shown below:

Product Description TN-SFP-ESX5 SFP, LC, 1000Base-SX/Fibre Channel 1X, Extended multimode 50/125um, up to 2km

TN-SFP-ESX6 SFP, LC, 1000Base-SX/Fibre Channel 1X, Extended multimode 62.5/125um, up to 2km

TN-SFP-FC2XM SFP, LC, Fibre Channel 2X,1X / OC-48 / STM-16 / 1000Base-SX, multimode, 300m

TN-SFP-FC2XS2 SFP, LC, Fibre Channel 2X,1X / OC-48 / STM-16 / 1000Base-LX, single mode, 2km

TN-SFP-FC2XS15 SFP, LC, Fibre Channel 2X,1X / OC-48 / STM-16 / 1000Base-LX, single mode, 15km

TN-SFP-FC2XS40 SFP, LC, Fibre Channel 2X,1X / OC-48 / STM-16 / 1000Base-LX, single mode, 40km
All models comply with the Multi-Source Agreement (MSA), ensuring compatibility with industry standard networking equipment, and are backed by Transition's industry-leading lifetime warranty. In addition, all models include an enhanced Digital Diagnostic Monitoring Interface (DMI), which provides access to crucial real-time information such as transmit power, receive power, bias current and operating temperature of the SFP via compatible management software platforms.

These new SFP releases are available immediately and supplement Transition's already extensive SFP offering now supporting 100Base-FX, OC-3, STM-1, OC-12, STM-4, 1000Base-SX/LX, OC-48, STM-16 and Fibre Channel 1X and 2X.

SFP-based Media Converters

To compliment the new SFP pluggable optics additions, Transition has a number of SFP-based media converters available, all of which provide an empty SFP slot to allow users to simply plug in the appropriate SFP optics to suit their application. The converters include Fast Ethernet models, Gigabit Ethernet models and a universal model in which any of Transition's SFPs can be inserted into the two SFP slots.
