Toshiba Announces Low Voltage, Low Resistance Power MOSFETs for Notebook PC Battery Protection Circuit Module Applications

Broad Line-up provides High Power Output with Low R(DS)(ON) in Small, Thin Packages

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 27 - Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, announced a broad selection of power MOSFETs in its Low Voltage, Low Resistance Series targeted for applications in lithium-ion batteries in notebook PCs and other handheld electronic devices.

"The new MOSFETs address market trends for lower on-state resistance (R(DS)(ON)) and thinner, smaller packages with high drain power dissipation, which result in increased power efficiency for battery powered devices," said Jeff Lo, business development manager, power semiconductors, for TAEC. "We're offering a broad line-up with a wide range of current and R(DS)(ON) ratings to meet various application requirements in lithium-ion batteries with protection circuit modules."

Developed by Toshiba Corp., the new MOSFETs are based on the Toshiba UMOS IV and UMOS V high speed switching power semiconductor processes.

MOSFETs for Li-Ion Battery Circuit Protection

To support a wide range of design requirements, the series includes 11 new 30V MOSFETs targeted for use in protection circuit modules (PCM) for Li-ion batteries in notebook computers or consumer electronics. Of these MOSFETs for PCM, four are offered in low-profile Toshiba SOP Advance packages, measuring 5mm x 6mm x 1.0mm, with drain current ranging from 35A to 45A and driving voltage of 4.5V or 10V. This group includes three n-channel, single devices and one p-channel single MOSFET with R(DS)(ON) ratings (typ. at V(GS) = 10V) ranging from 1.8milliohms to 3.5milliohms.

An additional seven low resistance, 30V MOSFETs for PCM applications are offered in SOP-8 packaging, which measures 5mm x 6mm x 1.9mm. Five of these feature n-channel single polarity, with drain current ranging from 11A to 18A, driving voltage of 4.5V or 10V, and typ. R(DS)(ON) ratings (at V(GS) = 10V) ranging from 2.1milliohms to 7.5milliohms.
