Tormach Tooling System Expands Line

New additions to the popular quick-change R8 tooling system

Waunakee, WI January 16, 2007 - Tormach, Inc., innovators of CNC technology, announced an expansion of the popular Tormach Tooling System (TTS) line of low cost quick change tool holders.

The latest additions to the line include a boring head, ¼" and 5/16" tool holders, a shell mill holder, and a conversion kit to adapt generic ¾" shank tools to work with the Tormach Tooling System. The entire line is available directly from the manufacturer at www.tormach.com .

TTS brings new life and unexpected features to the classic R8 taper found in most small mills. TTS is 100% compatible with R8, yet offers quicker tool changes, improved rigidity, better height repeatability, and reduced clearance requirements. Inspired by the dual contact geometry used in the latest generation of high-end machining spindles, TTS achieves dual contact by referencing both the spindle taper and the spindle face. The unique shape provides a wider base, giving the tool holder a more rigid connection to the machine spindle. The TTS was originally designed for Tormach's PCNC 1100 CNC mill, but works equally well with CNC converted knee mills, Bridgeport mills, and other machines with R8 or Morse taper spindles.

"The high cost of tooling had been one of the barriers to truly affordable CNC," says Tormach CEO Greg Jackson. "The Tormach Tooling System changes all that. Like other Tormach products, TTS allows you to make what you need easier, quicker, and more affordably."

Additionally, and in response to a wide variety of requests for different TTS tool holders, Tormach offers the ability for users to fabricate their own tools. TTS Blank has the hardened and ground TTS geometry on the spindle end, but the working end is a 39 mm x 60 mm cylinder of unhardened steel. It can be used to create custom tool holders or specialized insert tooling.

The success of TTS has lead several companies to begin development of an Automatic Tool Changer based on the TTS holders. The 'ATC' model of the TTS is a special version tool holder designed to assist development work. Bob Yellin of Z-bot is one such independent developer, who believes in the effectiveness of the TTS for low-cost and short-run fabrication "The Tormach Tooling System is just one of the best things that ever happened to the milling machine industry. Greg Jackson came up with an outstanding product at a really good price."
