ThyssenKrupp Safway Honored with Numerous Safety Awards During May

The National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) presented ThyssenKrupp Safway with five awards for Meritorious Safety Performance at its annual awards banquet in May.

ThyssenKrupp Safway was commended for overall excellence and execution of safety knowledge throughout 2008 at the following jobsites:

BP Cherry Point (Bellingham, Wash.): zero recordables for nearly 120,000 manhours worked

Valero Refinery (Benicia, Calif.): zero recordables for nearly 129,000 manhours worked

Flint Hills Refinery (Corpus Christi, Texas): zero recordables for nearly 142,000 manhours worked

Houston Refinery (Houston, Texas): zero recordables for nearly 40,000 manhours worked

Texas City Plant of Union Carbide (Houston, Texas): zero recordables for nearly 74,000 manhours worked

NPRA also commended the ThyssenKrupp Safway Benicia branch with the Contractor Award for Meritorious Safety Performance at Valero Energy Corporation's Benicia refinery. The branch achieved a recordable incident rate of 1.0 or less with no workplace-related fatalities. The Benicia crew at the refinery achieved a recordable incident rate of zero after nearly 150,000 hours worked. In addition, Valero named ThyssenKrupp Safway Contractor of the Month at the Benicia refinery.

The Wisconsin Safety Council (WSC) and the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) awarded a certificate of excellence to ThyssenKrupp Safway for a low lost time injury incidence rate and overall safety success in 2008.

ThyssenKrupp Safway received an Outstanding Achievement Award for Excellence in Safety, which was based on the company-wide total recordable incident rate being below the industry average.

"This award is a true representation of all of the hard work and effort our employees do collectively to ensure the safety and health of everyone they work with," said Midwest Regional Safety Manager Carrie Heller. "Many times everyone can see the effort at one jobsite location or at one branch, but for us to achieve this on a company-wide level is an accomplishment to be proud of."

The certificate is signed by Frances Huntley-Cooper, Worker's Compensation Administrator for the Wisconsin DWD, and Bryan Roessler, Director of the WSC.

Also during the month, ThyssenKrupp Safway received the "Five Safest Companies Award" from the Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association (NSCSA).
