Press release date: May 4, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. (May 04, 2007) - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, announces the availability of a new technical poster to highlight the unique plate handling capabilities of Thermo Scientific Nautilus LIMS(TM) for high throughput applications. Nautilus LIMS contains plate handling functionality out of the box while remaining flexible in how it can be configured and extended to meet custom needs for easy modeling and integration of data originating from automated processes. The poster, which was presented at the recent LabAutomation 2007 conference, is available free-of-charge via www.thermo.com/informatics

The new technical presentation discusses the specific challenges that a LIMS solution is required to address when employed in high throughput environments. Among others, these include intuitive user interface, configuration tools, integration with instrumentation and automation equipment and extensibility. Furthermore, the poster stresses the importance of plate template and design and also the need for a LIMS solution to be able to extend its functionality via custom hooks and codes when necessary.

The most common plate handling operations are detailed in the poster: oReplication - used to make multiple copies of plates. Each replicate has the same dimensions and properties as the original. oSplitting - dividing one plate into several other plates. oProbing - adding another solution to the well positions within a plate. oCompressing - used to create new plates, each composed of smaller plates. oPooling - used to pool the contents of source plates into a new or an existing plate. oCherry-Picking - Selecting "hits" to be moved from source plates to new destination plates.

With built-in plate handling functionality and utilizing a service-oriented architecture in Microsoft® .NET, Nautilus LIMS ensures that organizations keep pace with changes in laboratory techniques, automate their processes and manage the ever-increasing data volumes.
