The eXact® Micro 7+ Advanced Photometric System

For immediate release: March 6, 2009

Another U.S. patent was issued for reagent delivery and photometric chlorine analysis

Chlorine analysis has wide commercial applicability, and is useful for testing drinking water, pool and spa water, aquarium water, industrial and environmental water, and for other types of water testing. The eXact® Micro 7+ Advanced Photometric System (US Patent #7333194), which uses DPD for touch-free chlorine analysis in a test strip form, was granted U.S. Patent #7491546 on February 18, 2009. The U.S. Patent Office recognized this system as new, inventive, and useful in the water testing industry.

The eXact® Micro 7+ Advanced Photometric System uses technology that offers faster, safer, easier, and more precise water testing. Speed and accuracy are improved because the sample cell/cuvette is built into the photometer. The touch-free chlorine analysis minimizes testing time; and thereby reduces monochloramine interference. Another feature is that handling of cells or cuvettes is eliminated.

With the reagent delivery device (eXact® Strip Micro) the two required reagents for free chlorine testing are impregnated and dried onto two different filter papers which are then attached to a plastic handle, so reagent handling is made easy. This innovation allows the simultaneous introduction of reagents that must be kept segregated. As per Standard Method 4500-Cl-G, free chlorine testing with Diethyl-p-phenylene diamine sulfate (DPD) uses monobasic and dibasic phosphate buffers. DPD is unstable in the presence of the phosphate buffers. With eXact® Strip Micro these reagents are segregated and stable on a single strip called eXact® Strip Micro DPD-1.

The free chlorine method is as follows: Fill the eXact® Micro 7+Advanced Photometer cell to capacity (4 ml) with the water sample. Turn on the meter, and press "menu" until CL1 appears then "zero" the meter. Press "read" and dip the eXact® Strip DPD-1 in the water sample with a back and forth motion for the 20 second countdown, remove the strip, and discard. The meter immediately measures and displays the free chlorine level with 0.01 mg/L resolution.

This technology has already been applied to measure lead in paint and lead in water. The eXact® Micro 7+Advanced Photometric System has expanded to more than 30 different parameters for analysis.
