The SINOCHRON®Motor The Energy Saver of Electric Motors

New energy efficiency directives for electric drive units increase motor requirements. Many users are wondering if they need to switch to considerably more complex drive systems of larger size. The answer is: no they do not. There is a motor design with higher efficiency using identical installation space of current drive units but without additional components but even more benefits. SINOCHRON®Motors benefits allow cost amortization in relatively short time frames making its use feasible also for all applications not (yet) covered by the new regulations.

The content of the EU-regulation No. 640/2009 is clear: after June 16, 2011 all line powered three-phase motors and geared-motors with rated outputs of 0.75 up to 375 kW operating continuously at rated load (duty cycle S1) must be at minimum of efficiency class IE2 according to IEC 60034-30:2009 (high efficiency). After 2015 all motors for such applications have to achieve at least efficiency class IE3 (premium efficiency) or IE2-drive units to be equipped with electronic inverters.

* Standardization in the works

The new energy efficiency regulations for electric motors take effect in June 2011

New Drive-Unit Concepts are in Demand

Applications with traditionally continuous duty amongst others are pumps and fans and account for a large portion of the industrial consumption of electricity. Manufacturers of these machines are now required to redesign their drive unit concepts to meet the new regulations. SINOCHRON®Motors from ABM Greiffenberger offer a great solution.

Attributes of SINOCHRON®Motors

The main characteristics of this motor design are covered by the name: it is a synCHRONous-motor with high-performance permanent-magnets with a SINusodial flux distribution (EMF). Internal permanent-magnets ease rotor manufacturing and allow for favorable magnet geometry. The anisotropic rotor geometry provides a sinusoidal distribution of the magnetic flux with the result of eliminating cogging. Stator windings are identical to asynchronous motor windings allowing for a cost efficient production of the stators in large batch sizes.

Key Benefits: Compact, Powerful and Energy Efficient

Key benefits of SINOCHRON®drive units can be educed from the design criteria. Motors are of compact design offer outstanding true running characteristics and low noise operation. They trump asynchronous motor with close to double short time overload capability allowing in many cases the selection of smaller motor frames.
The motors have excellent control behavior and combined with included control unit SDC a reliably controlled operation from zero up to maximum speeds is guaranteed. At the same time drive units convince with excellent true running even at very low speeds and impressive dynamics at impulse load and speed variations.

When it Comes to Energy Savings: Excellent - Better than IE3

SINOCHRON®Motors are already used in different industrial applications. A major reason for their use has not been mentioned yet: Low energy demand. Drive units are graded in efficiency class IE3 but achieve clearly better values than required by IE3. Exceeding today's requirements guarantee against increased efficiency demands in the future and maximize possible savings. By substituting existing line powered three-phase drive units, energy savings of 20 to 35% can be expected.

Not Just Savings of Energy - also Space

The characteristic profile of these drive units make them well suited to drive e.g. pumps and fans that operate continuously and are now covered by the new EU-regulation. Replacing drive units in existing machines and equipment is simple because no additional components like encoders are needed. If these drive units are selected for new designs, users will benefit from smaller overall envelopes of up to 30%. This allows machine designs to be more compact.

Of course the same advantages are valid for applications without continuous duty according to the standards (S1), but drive units are used over longer periods of time. In these cases energy savings add up almost as quickly and in many of those applications, e.g. warehousing logistics, the compact design plays also an important role in the selection of components. Hence, SINOCHRON®Motors also score here.

Additional Advantages in Partial Load Duty

The motor design developed by ABM Greiffenberger not only offers advantages in applications with continuous duty. Since the efficiency is also considerably better in partially loaded duty cycles, when compared to standard asynchronous machines, the SINOCHRON®Motor works here even more efficient. Additionally, drive unit are virtually loss free at no load operation. With these behaviors this motor design also offers great advantages in powering conveying equipment, escalators, spooling machines, compressors and traction drive units amongst others.

Quick Amortization

All technical advantages aside success of new a product rise and fall with one additional factor: the price of the motor. Cost investments must be in a "healthy" relationship to the achievable energy savings to allow machine-, equipment- or vehicle-manufacturers to select such a drive unit. And here again SINOCHRON®Motors with SDC-controllers are considerably more cost-effective compared to conventional servo-motor with encoders. Compared to conventional gear-motors initial investment is higher but in many cases a one year pay back is feasible. Over their life time SINOCHRON®Motors offer substantial savings as demonstrated in the following real life example.

In summary SINOCHRON®Motors can be recommended for numerous applications in many industries - no matter if continuous or partial load duty cycles.
