The MHEDA Journal Honors Material Handling Legend
Industry legend Howard Bernstein honored by material handling magazine.
Dewitt, NY - The MHEDA Journal Online (http://www.TheMhedaJournal.org), is the leading online magazine for the forklift, conveyor, storage & handling, and general material handling equipment industries. The 2nd Quarter issue of the magazine is online now and features an article honoring material handling legend and 1965 MHEDA President Howard Bernstein. Bernstein stepped down from The Atlas Companies (Schiller Park, IL) at the age of 88.
Bernstein's tenure in the material handling industry began more than 60 years ago. After returning from World War II, he began work at Sterling Lumber Company selling industrial lumber and wood pallets. During his time at Sterling, Bernstein witnessed the rise of the forklift, which began to boom in popularity as people began to see how palletization of loads saved time, space and money. In 1951, Bernstein started Atlas Lift Truck Rentals.
Since then, Howard has gone on to become a material handling and MHEDA titan. He attended the very first MHEDA Convention, is the longest tenured MHEDA Board Member, with 18 years of service, and has attended 54 of the 56 MHEDA Conventions.
"Howard is the icon for the importance of independent dealerships," says Tim Hilton, CEO of Carolina Handling (Charlotte, NC). "He has been instrumental in building the foundation from which we have all benefited. I have never been with Howard when I have not learned more about our industry."
Now, more than half a century later, Bernstein is stepping away from Atlas to begin a scholarship initiative for colleges with an Industrial Distribution curriculum. "We have to attract young, bright minds into the industry that has been so great to me," says Bernstein. "We need to get young people involved with material handling because it's such an important industry. We're not selling hula hoops here. These are labor-saving devices. It's equipment that people need."
