Dewitt, NY - The MHEDA Journal Online (http://www.TheMhedaJournal.org), is the leading online magazine for the forklift, conveyor, storage & handling, and general material handling equipment industries. The 3rd Quarter issue of the magazine is online now and features articles about recruiting, retaining, engaging and training young talent. A common theme that emerged was distributors using mentoring relationships and job shadowing programs to train employees and prepare them for advancement in the company. The MHEDA Journal spoke with material handling distributors across North America about how they use mentoring programs at their companies for a series of mentoring success stories.

Mentoring is one of those words that gets bandied about when business owners talk about training their employees. But what does it really mean? It's the rare company that actually invests in a formalized mentoring program that pairs employees together and helps them grow personally and professionally.

Like many companies, Raymond Handing Concepts in Fremont, California, had a history of hiring managers from within. But the training that these new managers received was not as effective as it needed to be. "We were spending money, but we weren't getting a return on that investment," says President Stephen Raymond. "Our management training at that time can best be described as 'Poof, you're a manager now.' Somebody would be selected to fill a management or supervisor position based on their leadership potential, but we didn't put them through any development training. They would either figure it out or they wouldn't."

In 2008, Raymond decided to change that approach. He created an extensive mentoring program to help employees make the transition to management, the Raymond Academy. The program pairs a veteran manager with a new or potential manager who participate in a yearlong dialogue designed to teach the new manager how to become a leader in the company.

"Other forklift companies I've worked at just have basic training for a couple of weeks," says Keary Sisco, a participant in the Raymond Academy. "This program has helped my confidence to become a better manager."
