The George Washington University Refreshes EMC Information Infrastructure

University Graduates To EMC Symmetrix DMX-3 and EMC CLARiiON CX3 Systems To Maximize Performance, Functionality and Reliability of Information Infrastructure

HOPKINTON, Mass., Oct. 23 -- EMC Corporation, the world leader in information management and storage, today announced that The George Washington University (GW University) will refresh its entire information infrastructure with EMC's leading-edge storage systems.

"As information continues to increase, we need to ensure we have the performance, capacity and reliability to accommodate the needs of our faculty, staff and students while keeping our costs the same," said Adam Stone, Senior Information Systems Engineer at GW University. "We chose EMC because we had complete confidence in their storage systems and hardware support organization."

For its technology refresh, GW University, the largest higher education institution in the nation's capital, purchased multiple EMC storage systems to support its information lifecycle management (ILM) strategy in its two disparate datacenters. In each datacenter, EMC® Symmetrix® DMX-3 will manage top tier enterprise applications including the University's financial systems, email, data warehouses and student records. The University's EMC CLARiiON® CX3-80, which is based on the EMC-developed CLARiiON UltraScale(TM) architecture, will provide second and third tier storage for critical, but less frequently accessed data and departmental applications. The University will also be using EMC Documentum® Enterprise Content Management software to scan, manage and archive fixed content, such as contract, invoice and financial images, onto EMC Centera(TM) content-addressed storage systems.

"We always strive to keep our systems up-to-date and rotate equipment accordingly," said Stone. "We heard about the increased performance, capacity and functionality available with the EMC CLARiiON CX3 systems and we did not want to refresh our information infrastructure without these systems. We're particularly excited about the UltraScale architecture's impressive performance, throughput and scalability and the fact that we can mix-and-match the latest disk drive technology to meet our business needs and provide new services to our users."

In the future, GW University will be using EMC Rainfinity Global File Virtualization software and EMC Celerra® storage systems to support its network attached storage initiative. Additionally, the University will add EMC Disk Library systems to support its backup-to-disk system in its information infrastructure.

"We always consider a variety of technologies available before refreshing our IT environment to ensure we're getting the highest return on our investment," said Stone. "EMC continually develops and delivers innovative new services and solutions that optimize our information infrastructure and provides reliable and comprehensive professional services and support."

GW University also worked with EMC Global Services to design and implement a business continuity strategy with two, fully mirrored datacenters. To improve recovery point and recovery time objectives to fully protect data, this strategy relies on EMC SRDF®, EMC MirrorView(TM), EMC TimeFinder® and EMC SnapView® software.
